Sparring with contacts lenses...

I'm virtually blind without glasses/contacts... Talk to your eye doctor to see if a different brand or fit might work for you. In sparring its not much a deal, if you lose a contact you can wave it off. But in a competition you'd be pretty ****ed when that contact slipped and folded in half inside your eye.

Best to start training without any sort of eyewear. See if you can adjust. I know after a awhile of not wearing glasses or contacts, my vision adapts just enough.

Thanks for all the helpful advice. I think I will try the eye drops method and if that doesn't work I will just have to get used to sparring without using lenses, and work on my guard lol. Going to have laser surgery as soon as possible anyway, my prescription is very straight forward but like I say I'm pretty badly shortsighted. Thanks again

If you do look into laser surgery and plan on boxing afterward look into PRK not lasik its safer for contact sports cause there is no flap left on the cornea that can be knocked off. The cost of the surgery is the same and same exact outcome but its more painful than lasik it was not fun the first 3 -4 days to try to sleep and i was very light sensitive i couldnt watch tv really but its worth it now

Yup, or LASEK, that's fine too. Basically anything that doesn't create a flap is ok.
Over night vision correction is also an option if you are worrying about the long term efficacy/cost of Laser

This is an interesting topic for me. I used to box and was looking back into it, although the nearest gym in my area has no ring for sparring. However, my vision has went downhill in the past few years. I was going to get lasik and I believe when I went for my screening they wanted me to get the one where they lift the flap. However I read on the internet that the flap never fully heals and I saw multiple doctors saying that you should never participate in contact sports again. The annoying part is that they never asked me about my hobbies or explained to me the risks of it. They just tried to get me in for Laisk surgery 2 days after the screening. However it says that PRK is recommended for people with thinner corneas. What if I'm not as good a candidate for it? Does that put me at a higher risk of the possible complications? As far as contacts go, someone said that your vision adjusts. Ya, I think if you remove your glasses you notice your vision gets worse, and then improves a bit a few seconds after. However as the day goes on my eyes just become more strained.

The doctors told me not LASIK because it creates a flap or are LASIK and LASEK two different things? I just know PRK the cornea had to completely grow back thats why it is so painful

Its not so much painful as it is just uncomfortable. Its like you have a bad scratch on your eyes and it wouldnt stop tearing the first day after surgery and it was hard to sleep it hurt to watch tv really couldnt for 3-4 days i basically just laid on my couch and did nothing for 3-4 days then it started getting better as the cornea grew back over. The first 3-4 days are just really uncomfortable all around

Couldn't have said it better. No painful per se, just really uncomfortable.
I could never get used to boxing without being able to see... I could barely see how to get into the ring for my white collar bout too many blurs. But some people deal with that fine.

you could try the surgery maybe try to get a grant or the procedure thru public assistance. julian jackson cxould not see at all. most don't know that. he just engaged his opponent. there are many fighters who have bad hands, knees, health and lots have bad vision. don't use bad eyesight as a reason to fail. fight thru it. some fighters swell in the eyes every time they fight or spar and just keep comming like ray mancini for example. do not fight with contacts. bad idea. maybe concentrate on ring generalship. step with the opponent instead of following him/her or become an advocate for persuing your dream with a handicap. your choice. be careful.
