My mile is about 9.30 at the minute. Terrible. Need to drop some weight!

A few years ago I did 1.5 mile in 9:03 when I was completing selection for the Paratroopers

Not a chance I could get close to that these days

I'll be happy to level out at about 7-7:30 minute miles when I drop some timber

at the moment i start my workouts with a 1.5 mile run and i do it in 12 to 13 minutes.

That is a perfect warm up pace. Just over 8 min/mile pace. Perfect......

thanks man. i used to be heavily involved in track - 20 years ago but I have forgotten a lot. Your comment helps because I was wondering whether or not I was running too fast or too slow. But throughout I felt loose, my breathing is easy so I take that as the indication that I was doing OK.

Its spot on; the same warm up pace I use. The aim is to get your heart rate up to a nice aerobic level and blood to the areas where its needed.

A fast warm up pace can plunge you into oxygen debt and give your heart, lungs and muscles a shock that they don't need......

My fastest mile ever was 5 min mile. That was two years ago and I haven't been able to do it again. I guess I was lucky that day.

Normally just do 5ks/3miles but I might time myself over a flat out mile this week and see how I do. Generally do the first mile in 5 minutes or so on my 5K. Go through phases with running. Sometimes I love it, sometimes I absolutely fucking loathe it.

Only a couple of our leading locals would run 5 mins for the first mile of a 5K. Are you sure you're not being a little optimistic there?
