  • Boxing stance and pros and cons.

I've been really breaking down allot of difference stances in boxing and fundamentally experimenting with.

I feel my natural stance when boxing is to have my left hand extended (much like Ali/Lennox/Vladimir) due to my long arms it allows me to dictate range and space and utilize timing better.

What would be a counter style to this stance? How would someone nullify what i do offensively/defensively?

It's not so much a style that could nullify but more so aptitude. But i guess...For instance, someone of similar height fighting from a southpaw stance (possibly philly shell they could naturally block a lead left with the right shoulder/left hand) could shoot a right hook pretty quickly with it/over-under it (maybe even to the body and try to force you to keep the hand down). Too many variables. A stance is only as good as the fighter. Look at Martinez.... Hands down? Logic tells you that's not supposed to work.

true I very true in regards to the how of using it i switch between styles also during a fight... but that's not the point.

I guess i look at kinda like paper rock scissors in a way. I spar with this really big dude who would barrel his way in, when my hand wan't out, I would pick off or block allot of his hooks and he fights out of the pika boo style. I just as i was sparring him i went back to my natural way of claiming ring general ship, and as soon as i switched about 30 seconds after that he knew he was in trouble.

I used my legs when he would really try to rush in but as soon as i was about a foot away i could tag him with really hard jabs to cover up my right hand or switch it to a hook. when I slowed i would just use my legs to get back.

As for the cons i see you point getting me to drop my hand is his goal. I was also thinking he would try to dip low and throw a straight right hand to the body and then make me think body shot and go for the head. so i'm weary of that as well i would throw a left hook to get out of the way and try to press the action again to punish.

i find pikaboo and not a fir for this style but a philly shell would be. hmm... what would be a natural style for a philly shell? ( in your opinion, depending on how it's used of course)

Yeah, against a peekaboo style I would throw the left hook too (providing they arent freakishly athletic) also at their hands and try to swipe them away or maybe even hook them to try and turn them/make them stop. Be weary though as you said of a body shot into a head shot. There used to be this guy in Mexico who would always push me back with it. He'd dip low and throw an angled straight upwards into my chin. I'd block it most of the time with my right (I fought in a bit of a philly shell) but it would throw my balance off. I'd have to compensate by putting too much weight on my back foot and he'd just collapse on me...either that or I over turned and damn near give him my back. He would sometimes step on my feet if I got careless just to do it so it wasn't always easy to avoid. I had to switch to southpaw most of the time with him just to give him the different angle...

As for your question at the end I'm not sure I understand. Mind re phrasing it?

Well I dont believe in other people beating what you got, if you got skill, whatever you do will come out in the end. Skill is what counts, I wouldent worry about what someone could do to you.

I'd think of it more in terms of "What are the cons to my style of fighting"

I was taught a very angled off stance, with the knees bent almost in a crouch with my left hand infront of my chin. It was fine for sharp shooting and bobbing but I had no power at all on my left side.

Since I like to through shots that hurt I sqaure up a little more, and that helps with maintaining even weight on both legs and side stepping which I also use a bit.

So I'd be more worried about what you like over anything.
