You over think too much is if the only time you throw punches is when he throws first. In that case your opponent can easily read you and for an experienced boxer, he could easily adjust and counter your counters.

When i try working on my counters in sparring i always try to set him up by throwing the same punches occasionally to see how he reacts, then when i've read him i know what to counter with. When countering i never stay idle for too long, i feint, paw the jab, throw punches that are not intended to land to set up power shot. The key is, you gotta stay sharp at all times. Work on reaction time when countering jabs, straights, and hooks on the pads with a trainer.

The trick to counter punching is 2 things:

1 setting them up and predicting what theyre going to do, then getting them in the process of doing it. Thats the main thing I consider.

And 2, seeing the punches as they come. Once you train your eyes and hands to be fast enough, when somethings coming even if you dont have them set up you can counter it.

Your over thinking is preventing you from being in the moment and seeing them, since it looks like you're trying to take the 2nd approach. But the main thing is always number one for counter punching. Seeing things in the moment is good but nothing beats strategy to make them try to punch.
