  • Boxing Newbie - Needs Tips & Tricks

Hi guys, this is my first post and my second week training. I am right handed and in fairly good shape.

    So far we worked on:

    - Conditioning (which BTW is MUCH harder than I have ever imagined. No complaints here).

    - Stance and moving/pivoting

    - Jab and the straight right hand.

    QUESTIONS:

    1. When I am moving for a couple rounds, my left quad feel like it's tightening up and my right calf feels like it's going to lock up. Is this normal?

    2. When I throw the jab, I feel stable. When I jab and squat low, I still feel stable. When I jab and retract my fist then throw the straight right, I feel like I could tip over at any moment. Does anyone have any quick tips for this?

    3. I having a hard time controling my distance and cutting off the angle when pivoting/moving around the heavy bag.

If anyone has some advice it would be greatly appreciated. I want to soak up as much knowledge as I can.

I'm a noob too, so don't take this for too much.

1.You should stretch more, that doesn't sound normal. Pavel's book Beyond Stretching is recommended.
2.Sounds like you're not pivoting right. Have your coach check this one out.
3.This will get better with time and practice.

These are common problems for beginners.

First off, do your warm up and STRETCH. It's very important to stretch warmed up muscles even if you are young because you can hurt yourself.

Second, balance is something that doesn't come easy. Listen to your trainer, make sure your stance is proper and practice walking in all directions every single day. Simply walking forward, left, right and backwards is something you should do for a very long time.

Then once you get to a level where your not off balance, start splipping under a straight rope and go from there.

I don't want to give you a lot of technical stuff like most will, it will take practice, months and months of practice.

Also, do a lot of lower body workouts, the legs are the most important part to a boxer. Everything comes from the legs up, weak legs means weak everything.

as far as the locking up and the tightening feeling

you have to stretch before and then warm up

or warm up then stretch, but i stretch b4 warm up, cause you never know

as far as your distance with the heavy bag, just take things one step at a time

jab once to get inside, then move your head and go around the heavy bag, then back out

jab twice, keep your right up, throw a left to the body then bounce out

        all with your hands up

really i can list countless combos but you will have to ask your coach

but yea the conditioning is no joke

my coach made me go around the gym 30 times, but here is the thing

yea i didnt want to, but i did anyway and then i went around twice more, and once going BACKWARDS

        and while throwing punches

with conditioning, you have to be willing to have a mindset like f u ck it, i want to b in conditioned

i dont want anybody touching my gorgeous face and getting hurt (it may sound lame, but thats how i think, thats how ali and SRR thought)

when u get tired then thats when you get into trouble, push thru the fatigue and keep going when you cant

        it will alll pay off

You should always warm up BEFORE you stretch. Stretching cold muscles can lead to serious injury. Do some calisthenics, get a sweat going and then stretch.

Alright, so today I went back to the guym and things went much better. It was easier finding my balance and controlling the distance, and I must say STRETCHING MADE A HUGE DIFFERENCE!

            Thanks guys!

            I don't think I could've gotten any better advice!
