My gym owner usually puts first timers against guys with 0 bouts or 1 bout with 1 loss it's not common for mismatches but they do happen not that it's a bad thing because you can get decent experience but if you get beaten badly you might lose a lot of confidence and start to doubt your work or it might motivate you to come back harder next time everyone reacts different to a loss but if you take an ass kicking and get humiliated in front of a crowd 9/10 the guy doesn't show his face in the gym again. So I'd say learn the basics get a lot of sparring and take one step at a time. And trust me everyone does it even I wanted to compete after a few sessions but there's a right time for everything and you'll know when Your ready. When you went to the contest did the fighters win most of their bouts you can usually tell a good gym from a bad one if the fighters representing the same gym win then they probably have a decent trainer
