  • Boxing with bare fists

    Hey guys,

So today I was doing some boxing with someone who has bullied me since 5th grade, who has never boxed before. I wore gloves, and I insisted him to do the same, however didn't because he thought that he could annihilate me with bare fists. I thought I was ok because it's a punch of someone who never boxed, I has the confidence to block or slip that punch, but when it started I kept my left guard down. After a simple jab jab right, he shot his punch which were actually pretty fast, and I was astonished; if I didn't turn my head to kill the impact, I would've been injured; it was a lesson learnt to not box with out gloves (obviously).

Anyways, my question is what are the effect of a 12 oz glove on one's punching speed and ability? Does bare hands actually make your punches faster? I feel ashamed that I wasn't able to block or slip a punch simple as what he threw.

You hit faster of course. It's also harder to "block" bare hands since it's a smaller target. Then again..I'm no Mayweather or Whitaker... so take that for what you will.

And wait..let me get this straight. He didn't wear gloves because he thought he'd murder you with them...so his handicap was to not wear gloves?

      You BOUGHT that?

Of course I resisted it, I told him that it's dangerous for both of us considering the fact that I'm wearing contact lenses and him never boxed before. But then it seemed like he didn't understand the importance of wearing gloves during a fight. I just posted his reason what he said, I know it doesn't make any sense at all.

But then everyone came to watch, and god damn a whole crowd was there. It was real ****** of me to buy that ****, I'll make him wear gears next time.

The whole existance of gloves in boxing are to "take the edge off" of bare fist fighting. Spar with MMA gloves some time, you'll notice you can't be sloppy with your blocking at all or you'll get hit often and hard.

When I was a kid- 9, 10, 11, up to 15 or 16- we used to "box" all the time, either bare fists, or with rags wrapped around our hands. No big thing; it was fun.

Thees nothing like 6oz. Ben Bow Gloves!!! They feel so good and become part of your hand. Hell theres 3oz on your wrists!!!! They allow true defensive skills to shine through, and no thumbing with them on. Do they still make them? Great craftmenship, I think they were made in Mexico? Ray
