  • sparring after 6 months (vid) Need advice!

ok first of all I know I need to keep my left hand up I just have a habit of dropping it.

But the main thing is I just retreat and cover up each time a combo is thrown? what is the correct way to deal with that?

    (im the one in black)

nice one mate coming along nicely like how ur keeping ur chin down but you need to step in with your punches more and throw ur shots turn your body into them because sometime your throwing just from the arms id also say have higher hands but thats just my preference.

Yeah, I'm much better with my left hand so I usually just keep it a bit out there to set up the counter left hook. I find that when I turn my hips into my right straight it leads me to over-extend and be off balance.

Sorry for crap quality buts it better than just posting text. I will post better footage later this week If i can. The other dude was a beginner as well, I get totally smashed by the more experienced boxers at the gym. Do you think its better to start of sparring with headgear or without?

and yeah, mostly arm punches because I'm moving back while punching, how long does it take to get over those panic reactions?

if you wanna get over girly reactions you gotta take some punches i mean real hard punches and i know everyone keeps saying that you should not be afraid of getting punched but that's the key point, it just hurts, it has to hurt you ain't playing voleyball you are boxing.

def best to spar with headgear mate if your boxing as an amateur you will have to wear one so its best to get use to it in the gym.
Dont worry about getting beat up by more experienced boxers mate aslong as your learning its all good and sparring is sparring ive seen some of the best boxers get mugged off in the gym and then stop there opponent in there next bout.
Getting relaxed in the ring and panic reactions as you call them take a while everyone has had them in some sense and if they say they aint they are lying just spar as much as you can mate and you will slowly get more relaxed.

What weight are you mate and how tall? and where you based bro.

You are doing just fine, my friend. Just fine. Your left hand is perfect where it is; you roll your shoulder nicely to avoid the right hand. My advice to you is to keep on really really focusing on your punching technique, so that it becomes automatic for you to throw hard punches. When you hit the heavy bag, when you shadow box, when you do everything, condition your mind and body to counter when you make the other guy miss.
I prowl a lot of boxing websites and see a ton of these videos, and I've trained fighters for 20 years, boxed for 37. You have something going there. You look real smooth in the ring and I can see you thinking in there. Teach your mind and your body equally and it will all come together for you.

im 6'0 and 140lbs. I'm based in Nottingham, UK.

And yeah only spared a handful of times. My coach says my jab is really good but right hand needs work.

edit: can you recommend a heagear brand? I'd rather get a quality one once.

                thanks bro!

My strength and conditioning is what lets me down, I can throw a combo but then I'll need a breather and end up getting stuck up on the ropes after my opponent comes back with me at something. But yeah need to sit down on my punches. I don't know how to wrap my hands so Im afraid i might sprain my wrist If i land at a weird angle.

You need to put your chin down with your head NOT on an ANGLE! Your gonna get hurt bad with your head tilted the way it is!!You have your neck tilted to the left and thats dangerous!!
I have no idea what kind of sparring that is no one is throwing punches, it looks like your shadowing with a friend.
Get a decent head gear in case you actually throw any punches. If you know your left hand is to low why is it still there? If you can't discipline yourself to keep your left hand up how can you learn anything at all? Theres the smart way to learn to keep it up then theres the ****** way by having an experienced boxer beat your left side up. Be smart ok!! Good luck! Ray.

6ft and 64kg is very good height for weight ratio you will be nice and tall at the weight so i suggest really put your left lead hand out at angle cosntantly sticking it in your opponents face you should jab jab jab your opponents head off standing your ground and wait for them to rush in before throwing a quick counter and moving off.
