I have never heard the term smoker's before but this was a club fight. We did not even wear head gear. I fought in MI. Headgear only applies if both fighters agree on it. Don't ask me how they get around that cause I don't know the answer to that. Anyways what is the big deal? 18 is adult right? You're telling me it is legal for me to have *** with an 18 year old girl (btw something I would not do at this point in my life) but not fight an 18 year old young man. We had the same level of experience. I have not been training since I was 18. Apparently he had been training since he was 16 me since I was 34. He was also about 3 inches taller. Everything actually seemed to weigh in his favor. I don't see how anyone could say the fight was unfair to him. Except that he was not in shape. But that was not my fault or problem.

honestly, i don't think age should really matter if experience is equal. my first fight, i was 13 and my opponent was 19. i won. if the older person is much more experienced then of course i'd have a problem with it. but in this case it seemed to be matched based on experience, which is fine.
BTW, cong****!

Controlled sparring is fine in my opinion though.

cong**** dude. don't listen to anyone giving out about your age - it takes more balls to take it up in your 30s than it does in your teens in my opinion. agree completely on the cardio too. that was what won me my first fight at the end of last year. good luck in your next fight!

Chances become minimal when the younger man is mature beyond his years plus has an equal or more experience than the older man. I took my 15 to 17 year old boxers to Somers Prison (Somers, Conn. Max Prison)to fight the inmates every year for about 3 years in a row. They fought men because they were way beyond their opponents experience. I wouldn't take young men if they were not mature physically and didn't have the edge from boxing in the JO programs and were now Open class boxers. Theres no bigger advantage in a boxing ring than experience and conditioning, some inmates were in decent shape and in their late 20s put we knew everyones abilities and strengths and everyone was matched accordingly. My kids weren't from the suburbs if you know what I mean so the trip wasn't just about boxing but more about life choices.
Smokers were originally where you could have some pro fights and use amatuers in "no contests" matches on the same card. The amatuer status could be in jepardy when pros and amatuers fought on the same card. The sign off was that the amatuer bouts had no decisions.
The old days Smokers were fighters who got some expenses but weren't considered pros, sort of semi-pro.
My son at 15 years old was a national champion on the same team that Tyson was on, he sparred with Marlon Starling (welter champ of the World) and other than Marlon not going full bore could actual give Starling quality rounds because he knew how to box and use his experience to think right with a very good pro fighter. What ever level your skills are on you must learn to be relaxed and be thinking of what your doing in the ring without becoming complacent.
I've had physically mature men with big mouths come in my gym and have had my son then 15 yrs old get in the ring with these morons and just beat the crap out their stomachs and sides and chest to the point of them quiting within the first minute!!!
Max be in shape and try to have your trainer know something about your coming opponent. Its important for any trainer to protect any fighter from getting in over their heads, its simply smart to do. Good luck, be first! Ray

There really is very little difference in strength between an 18 year old novice and a 30 odd year old novice on average.
And there are plenty of 15 / 16 year olds who can **** much harder than lads at the same weight in their twenties.
In the UK, at 17 you become a senior and at which point you are able to box anyone upto the age of 34. The masters divison is 34-40 years of age.
The OP nor his coach have done anything wrong in this case.
Cong**** on your victory !!! Keep up the hard work mate !!!
