You always step with the jab, standing while extending a jab can be harmfull to your health!!
Your always leaning forward to a degree because your weight is usually 65% forward up to 75% so your momentum should be moving forward but not to the point of loading your front foot. I good shaddow out to get a comfort zone going is work slowly triple jabboing and getting all your steps down so your in balance and comforable at the same time.
Glove needs to be in front of your eye slightly extended and you shot from there. Elbow is down and into your body and your glove comes directly back from exactly the same spot it left. Throw it without lifting your elbow or bowing your head (nodding) and if your drop your glove before its release a smart fighter will be looking for all the give away signs and your gonna get countered and eventually side stepped and combos are coming. A good solid hard jab with no give aways is the first weapon a good solid fighter needs. It the only punch thats defensive and offensive at the same time. The mirror will correct your flaws and your technique should be important to you. Poor technique is a flawed fighter and as competition goes up flaws are exposed. It hurts to get exposed HA! Ray

Just a few days ago I noticed that when I lean forward the jab is indeed more powerful and the right hand that follows more smacking.
It is said that you should not lean forward until you shoot right hand but I rather trust how punches effect heavy bag than theory.

Smh your coach is teaching you that.
edit: unless you are jabbing to the body, then it is more of an art to stepping in/leaning forward while not leaving yourself open.

It depends on the situation.
If the fighter is a step away, you may choose to step forward. Sometimes you step back while throwing the jab.
The most powerful jab you can throw is when both feet are set on the ground.
