Is skipping good for cardio ?

Anything that uses the Aerobic energy system is very good for cardio.

Yes, but I'd never use it as a substitute for running unless you are doing plenty of double jumps or incorporating a very fast rope turnover.

It will help footwork, and done for long enough will help you lose weight and improve coordination. Its also a good warm up exercise. Lastly if you're unfit......yea its a great cardio exercise. But I'd be very nervous of a guy who'd think he was fit enough to spar several rounds based because they could skip for 20 mins straight.

I once remember Enzo Calzaghe saying that he doesn't have his boxers skip rope. He said any 'fit' individual can do basic skipping for hours and it wont really help towards someone being 'ring fit'. He used to say that if he caught one of his boxers doing it he'd send them out for some sprint reps!!

And Enzo Calzaghe has only produced on good boxer, he's freaklish and naturally fit son. Look at Enzo Mac, he was slow, weak and uncoordinated when he faced his first decent opponant in Haye and has been destroyed ever since. Cleverly left him and detailed his full training schedule in this months fighting fit. He mixes long runs with sprints, heavy lifts and explosive circuits and skips every day. He is super fit.

Skipping does nothing for hours if you plod along, same as running. Intensity beats everything!

Gavin Rees, won a world title....
I've seen his fighters skip. Also if you have ever been to the Newbridge area you realise if you go for a run it'd be almost impossible not to climb a hill!!!

I don't agree with all your points in the running threads but for what its worth I actually agree with you here. I like Cleverly's routine and rate his fitness.

I understood Enzo Calzaghe's point regarding skipping though and it seems that you agree too judging by your second paragraph.

dctopboots01 opinions seems to vary, I'm not having a dig there maybe I've misunderstood points on other threads.
And Sugarj I wasn't trying to nay say about his fighters not skipping, just I have witnessed them skipping.

You'll get all sorts of opinions here. ha ha

I'm glad that the boxers get some skipping in at Newbridge. I really enjoy skipping!

Just about any form of boxing training:

                    1) Running
                    2) Skipping
                    3) Bag work
                    4) Pad work
                    5) Sparring

To be honest anything that gets your heart rate and breathing rate up is good for cardio for as long as it is exercise based. Obviously ******* gets your breathing and heart rate up in a non healthy way....ha ha

I'm a bit of a preacher when it comes to running as one of the best cardio exercises. Simply because you can easily measure performance/speed/distance covered so easily. Swimming fits that too.

Its hard to measure other cardio exercises for increases in fitness.
