Drills like this can train 3 things at the same time. In boxing you want strength. More importantly you should want to be strong for a long time. 3 minutes is a long time. Which is where you begin training your mind. When fatigue sets in you have a game changing decision to make. "Small things, All Things". That entire time you have been training your technique.
So be creative and look around there are tons of things you can do with 3lb or 1.5kg dumbells. Workouts that can be boxing specific.

Training for what? Dumbbells, IMO are more of a tool for isolating body parts.
They have places in strength training but moreso in bodybuilding.
If you want to do more relevant strength training with your dumbbells, you can almost use them in the same manner you'd use a kettle bell. If you think about it Kettlebells are just dumbbells with a funky handle.
You can do One arm Rows, Renegade Rows, Snatches, One Arm Shoulder Press, Lunges, Floor Presses are just some of several strength exercises you can do with dumbbells

As someone said before, dumbells are mostly for muscle isolating exercises. If you're going to hit the weights at all, you want to be doing compound movements. Muscles never act alone, you're always going to be using groups of muscles, so you need to train to reflect that. For example, curls are basically useless. When will you ever do that movement outside of the gym? You want to be doing squats, power cleans, deadlifts, and so on. If you only have dumbells, maybe hack squats or weighted pistol squats? You can also do 1 arm clean and presses with dumbells.
I prefer to use calisthenics to work on muscular endurance, and use weights to improve my CNS (central nervous system). 4-5 reps of a very high weight. Essentially, its maximal gains in terms of strength with very little hypertrophy, as pretty much all of the strength gains come from greater recruitment of muscle fibres.Last edited by as646; 02-15-2012, 02:06 PM.
