Ive noticed many boxers do this. Pacquiao, Cotto, Khan to name a few. I often hear there is a point to it such as helps you sweat better etc.

But is there really any excuse for waxing your legs?

I'd venture to guess that it's to stay cool. I don't know about a full-on wax, but a lot of athletes shave. In fact, I know some guys who work outdoors here in AZ (where it can easily get 117* in the summer) that do it to stay cool because the heat can literally kill you.
Mine are pretty hairy so I use clippers to keep it about 1/2" so that I stay cool but you can't tell that it's trimmed. I'm not into the waxed look so trimming is about as far as I'm willing to go. My g/f certainly doesn't mind either.
When I was training jiujitsu, I did it as sort of a courtesy to the other guys because nothing is nastier than a sweat-drenched mop of arm or leg hair grinding against your face.
