  • In need of improving stamina, any help?

    Hey guys,
Today I was doing some pad work and I had a very hard one (at least I thought it was. until now we were taking it slow and focusing on the basics whilst returning to our 1 jab/5 sec. type pad work) and I was disappointed of how much I lacked stamina. I have been running on my own, 5~6 times. I recently changed my roadwork to treadmills on normal days and go running outside on the weekends.

On the treadmill, I do it at full incline, run normally for the first 20 minutes and for the last 10 minutes I sprint as hard as I can for 1 min, and walk for a minute and i repeat that.

On sat., I go for a 4~7km run which I focus on LSD and sprint once at the last maybe 100m or so

I've been running regularly but I don't know why my stamina doesn't improve. Is there anything wrong I am doing in my running workout? Any help will be appreciated very much, thank you and god bless

Just from my experience in the ring, I can say running helps, swimming, but in the end ring conditions only comes from being in the ring, you will just have to push yourself, the more you do it the easier it will get

Throw in some HIIT that should help keep your stamina up and improve your resting rate which should help you in the ring. Try doing something that matches up with 3 mins HIIT and 45 secs - 1 minute resting.

      Good luck

        Here's what you can do

Get up early in the morning and do your roadwork. A morning run will help shed fat while at the same time building up your cardiovascular capacity.

Wind sprints and/or hill sprints(commonly known as HIIT) will help build your anaerobic capacity and help you handle the stresses of working under near maximal intensity(i.e. sparring, heavy bag training, mitt work, etc.)

Strength training, be it through weights or calisthenics, will help as well.

odds are that it's mainly inexperience more than lack of conditioning. it's likely that your tense in your shoulders and neck which will mean that your straining you muscles unnecessarily, which not only makes you tire quicker but robs your punches of their speed and power because your working against the tension in your muscles, the tension will also result in ineffective defence for the same reasons. and also as you pointed out not breathing when punching also can give you a stitch. but it's mainly from a lack of experience because these things get learnt in the ring and cannot be taught.

lol, well, you have figured out the problem is then. You have to breath with every punch. Exhale to be more specific. Otherwise you will get really really tired fast.

Start exhaling with the punches. You'll see an immediate difference.
