  • Help a counter puncher out

Hi guys I have a problem with letting my hands go. To give you an idea of my style, it's very similar to how Mayweather Jr fights. I'm very defensive and I hate throwing combos. Don't get the wrong idea, I'm not trying to be try hard FMJ, it's just what I'm comfortable with (in fact if I had the choice I'd much rather be an aggressive puncher like Ali but I digress).

The trouble is I have a huge problem of not throwing punches and when I do it's just 1 or 2. I'm quite sound defensively and I have decent timining and reflexes but I just want to know how can I get in the habit of throwing more punches, especially when countering? My favourite counter is either the jab or the right hand to the body or the right hand (sometimes overhand) to the head. My left hook is ok but not quick enough to catch people all the time when they're coming in.

    Thanks guys

to get in habbit of throwing more punches....throw more punches...lol simple...but to counter u must throw a punch after the opponent has..if u block it return a punch immediatly follow the punch back..say he throws a jab..follow his jab hand back to his face with ur right hand...if u catch a body shot say w ur right elbow...soon as he hits elbow..shooot ur right up and hit him w uppercut..so on and so on

I was once told that, as a counter puncher, you should throw just as many shots as your opponent. If he steps in with a one-two, and least come back with a jab. When your moving and waiting to counter, put your jab out there, slip it through his guard to avoid him dictating the pace all the way through. Basically, don't always wait for your opponent to punch, work your jab and keep them off balance and stop them from gaining too much confidence.

It helped me anyway, it might be useless advice for you, everyones different

if you're new to this sport you just might be a little gun shy. most people start out as counter punchers and wind up finding they're actually good as aggressors. It's the nature of the beast. Throw more punches and you'll see the type of fighter you actually are.
