  • Cutting off the ring

Hey everyone can anyone give me some pointers on teaching my 13 year old nephew on how to cut off the ring.

Maybe some drills I can do with him or direct me to some good instructional videos on youtube thank you in advance.

Its all about something I call proactive stepping. Its a principle (I did not originate) that states: For every step your opponent takes you take one step CLOSER to him. Now, the steps should be like a reflection, a mirror to your opponent. If he shuffles to his left take two steps right, your a reflection of his movements BUT to whatever degree his opp's stride is he should think to pronounce his a little more so you may continualy take up ground, or cut off the ring.

A great drill for this is with two fighters
Dissect the ring into a perfect 4 square (either imaginary or w some light tape)
Now w a partner one person attempts to slip and curl out of one quadrant while the other guy tries to cut him off and keep him there.
If the fighter gets out of the corner you try then to keep him as long as possible to one quadrant of the ring.
Hope this helped I am a boxing coach in MI and if you need me to be more specific please feel free to ask I joined this forum to promote and help out this great sport anyway I can

it's easy if you're an inside fighter, not so easy if you like to stretch out your arms when hitting someone

Just charge. Tell him to imagine he is a monster from space with unlimited power preying on an inferior less faster being. Make him feel empowered. Timing is important too. You have to look at opponent footwork and see where his pivotal food is heading. Tell him to keeps eyes on feet. I go running charging towards my opponent so fast and precise until I corner and finish them. I have perfected this and finish all my gym fights in under 15 seconds.

          joe louis

          roberto duran

they were experts at cutting the ring, its way easier to see than to explain
