  • First Am. boxing bout Sat...advice

Alright lads. As the title suggests i've got my first amateur boxing bout this Saturday and i can't help but think i'm being chucked in the deep end slightly. I've been boxing 6-7 months now but my coach says i look like i've been boxing for years and have a really good style. The guy i'm fighting Saturday has had 7 fights already and is a pressure fighter. Anyone got any good tips on fighting a pressure fighter with more experience? Thanks in advance!

First things first...remain calm even through fear and panic. The great Cus D'amato had alot to say about this, and made perfect sense.

"Don't worry about being scared going into a fight. It's when you ain't scared that's the time to worry. Fear is the friend of every good and reasonable athlete. - Cus D'Amato
As far as the kids style goes, it's an amateur bout, so always use your biggest advantages no matter what. Since this is your first fight, and your coach has good things to say as far as your skill level, I'm sure you'll do fine sticking to a stiff jab with a solid cross behind it, the good ol' "One-Two" could never go wrong. If he's a come forward fighter double up the jab and use lateral movement, find the angles and let your hands go, since it is a point system.

You'll do fine man, good luck, and remember....BREATHE!..control the fear, hide it somewhere and use it on the opponent once that bell rings.

Best bit I can give you is stay relaxed, its no different than hard sparring, let your hands go in combonations judges love combonations even if there are not any openings dont wait for one or you will not score ****.

Create the opening by letting your hands go, keep them hands up, face forward chin down.... do what your coach tells you to do and you will be okay.

Most amateurs only know forwards and backwards, work some side to side footwork. When he comes in try and turn him and fire that right, he won't be used to being hit from angles.

Other than that, chin down hands up and don't get lured into trading hayemakers, you'll only tire yourself out. Work your jab, pick your shots and remember to breath!

Just to let you all know, won my fight in the first round. I weighed in at 73kg, which was a surprise to me as the night before i weighed 76kg on my scales The boy i was fighting weighed in at 78kg which was a bit ****ty seeing as it was scheduled for 75kg. Bout started and i did exactly as i was told and danced around using the jab. Every time he threw a jab i slipped it and landed the counter right and rocked him about half way through the round with a massive counter right to the side of the head. At the end of the round he caught me with a haymaker which rocked me, referee shouted stop but he kept throwing punches so the ref DQ'd him. Thanks for all the advice boys, really came in handy!

If you are having your first bout then your trainer must see something in you. Think of your training and sparring and then just go out there and do it. Don't wait for him, for anything..... Get off first and get off often then follow up. Good luck man. Remember to breathe.............Rockin'
