  • messing around on the heavy bag

so i just got my heavy bag up at my new place, thought id do a few rounds and record for myself to see my mistakes. i havent been to the gym in... too long, so im pretty unfit and a little overweight.
FYI i keep looking up to make sure the nut/washer holding the bag up isnt about to fall out.

i see i often drop my left hand, and sometimes both, too much.
any critiques and insights would be appreciated.

you're hitting with you arms too much, footwork is needed. for example at 0:59 you lost your balance cause you weren't jabbing with your foot. yeah, your guards should be always up, don't lower your guard and then move it back up. but overall, nice

You're not thinking of the bag as being someone who is going to try and hurt you. This bad habit has a way of carrying over to the ring. It's much harder to hit the bag and maintain a strong defense...so when you actually go to fight and then try to keep your hands up and protect you head...you won't have the habit and conditioning to do so. You must always remember that when your hands are outstretched you are vulnerable to the counter punch...so you must bring your hands back as fast as possible to cover and you can't just stand there when you punch ...you have to move out of the way of the counter and move you head.Don't leave your hands out like that...you will get timed. Don't get relaxed with the bag because it won't punch you back...think of the bag as deadly opponent who wants to crush your head and body. Right now you are using the bag to build your power which is good for one type of workout...but don't fixate on that. No 1 rule in boxing...protect yourself at all times...make that your goal or you will get hurt and then your power will be wilt. You are flat footed...constantly set down..you need to develop elusiveness with your feet...a moving target is very hard to hit and you must constantly be thinking where you can position yourself to hit without being hit...think of the bag as a deadly person...ALWAYS.

ah, yes, i see what you mean. still gotta work on that - jabbing with my legs and body as one. still gotta work on a lot of things. you can feel your technique slip when youre unfit - you sort of take shortcuts in your movements. im starting to work out more and plan on going back to the gym when i get a bit fitter and get ahold of some money. thanks for the reply.
