Some fighters are extremely good at covering up to avoid punches or at least to soften the blow. I was impressed how good Jan Zaveck used this defensive technique to hang with Berto as long as he did. Berto was loading up and putting some serious heat on his punches but Zaveck was able to block most of them effectively.

problem with covering up as ur primary defnse is ur opponent can throw a combo and hancuff ur hands to ur face prety much

      it affects ur offense

also the guys gonna get thru if he uses a couple of throw awy punches to set u up
for one that will break thru

some times uve got to cover up

but its best to have a defense were u can block move ur head and use ur feet

then u will be wel rounded IMO

Using the double arm block is a 'belt and braces' approach. Very important that you keep watching what's coming. The thing is that it's an ideal block for the amateurs as it creates doubt in the mind of the judge as to whether the shot landed cleanly. Sure there are lots of defenses; slips, rolls, ducks, laybacks, lead hand/back hand blocks and parries, but don't rule out the double arm block as it's beautifully simple and extremely effective.

Here's a video link to the way I coach it to the boxer's that I work with. Remember, keep your head up and watch what's coming:
