  • I Wanna Take up Boxing

Well, lets see, I'll tell you guys a little about me. Im about 185-90, I play football, and im fairly athletic. Right now I play Defensive End, Im a starter too. Im not the biggest guy out there, probably the only linemen thats under 200, but i have speed and technique. I really want to start boxing when the season is over. So what types of workouts should i do? And what type of cardio would be good for me. I want to be explosive when i box. Also, i dont have a place to hang a punching bag, so would one of those free standing ones be good?

boxing isn't all about speed, power, technique. People forget theres a skills side to it, many hours of repititious combos and defense and conditioning. The psychological factor is huge, becos its not a social sport that u can have fun wif ya mates. Training isnt sposed 2 be fun, and nether is fighting.
The feeling u get in the ring and afterwards is something 2 live for.

yeah i know watcha talking about. Believe me, football training is hell. Countless miles and miles, push ups, bearcrawls etc etc gets tiring. But after sacking the qb, or winning a game, theres no better feeling.

And on boxing, ive been in a few matches before, with people i dont particualry like, and i crushed them. Man after i knocked the guy down and he gave up, i was so damn happy. Part of me wanted to keep fighting though lol.

Heres what you need (in order):
          #1 Heart
          #2 Conditioning
          #3 Speed

          My opinion

If I were you I would work with the jump rope alot in the beginning just to help with youre foot work. Get a good trainer with a style you like to learn the techniques, then just work with the techniques and speed in the beginning. My guess if youre closer to 200 and a footbal player youre buff enough and IMO speed/techniques and footwork is key in the beginning anyways so alot of shadow boxing (Infront of a mirror that shows youre entire body) just to perfect youre technique and jump rope.

Bag is more just to get power in youre combos and you can train a couple of months before you start on that (Don't get a free standing bag, join a gym).

For cardio I personally like swimming but it's more like a individual thing I guess.

haha, i know what you mean about heart, believe me i got alot of that out on the field, hopefully it will stick with me during boxing. But seriously though, Ill be playing football, and ill be chasing a running back, and instead of him trying to go headup with me he just runs out of bounds, no heart right there.

I think jump rope would definately help me, one thing i need to work on is my footwork, which would help me in both sports, thanks guys

just a warning, theres no sport like boxing, u do get hurt, it does take a LOT of effort and hard work, and the moment u wana b da slightest but lazy in da ring- u get hurt lol

so try it, and u'l c for urself, but believe me, i do a lot of sports and boxing by far requires the most fitness and heart!

but it gives u a amazing buzz, wen u win, u cnt beat dat feelin!

                  safe

i dont think ya should tell him he needs heart or not thats common sence. I think you can tell that not everyone is cut our to get hit in the face hundred times.

He needs help on how to get conditioned for boxing and what he needs to work on for speed, power , and technique. So just tell him what kind of workouts like how many rounds of shadow boxing and heavy bag, that sort of thing.

My biggest advise is go to a boxing gym and they teach you how to throw a jab hook and how your footwork must be. After you know how to throw punches and move around, then u can start getting stronger and faster on certain exrcises like the speed bag and heavy bag.
