  • Injury? Need some pro advice on this.

    Hi all.
I have been having some trouble with my left hand. I have always used bandages. But on Nov 2010 I hurt my hand. Not big deal, just a wound in one of the knucles. From then, i stopped because of studies. I restarted boxing by my own in Jan 2011.

So my problem is, whenever I punch the bag with my left hand repeatedly, a growing pain appears in a certain area, close to where I made the wound, and I need to stop because of the pain.

I went to the doctor and she didn't notice anything strange with my knuckles. I just made some X-Ray photos. I have them on CD ready for the doctor to see them. Also she told me I better ask some professionals, but right now I can't contact my trainer, so that's why I am posting here, hoping to get similar experiences. I have even tought maybe is because of the bandages... (adidas branded bandage, the only one I see they sell here)

Thanks in advance. I know is a strange way to start in a forum :P

If nothing pops up in the x-rays, it's probably scar tissue, which maybe causing the pain but you should use padding on your knuckles and yeah try wrapping your hands in a different way. When you wrap your hands, you should be protecting the entire hand including the knuckles by binding the joints with the wrap. You might also want to ice your hands after you train to reduce any muscular or bone swelling

An X-ray is just going to show bone. If you didn't break it, it's pretty pointless to get one done. I am going through severe hand issues atm. I broke my middle knuckle at the neck of the bone, pushed it back and down into my hand(I haven't fought since January of 2010). I have not been able to make a fist since, and am being scheduled for my second surgery.

If nothing is on the x-ray, it is one of or combination of three things. Soft tissue injury, you are not wrapping your hands correctly, or you are punching incorrectly.

Soft tissue injuries linger a while, and you were only gone for 2ish months. Take it easy with it, if it hurts stop. You don't need to continue until you can't take it anymore, the hell is that proving?

You are not even seeing a trainer, so I assume you are training yourself(BAD!). Go see a trainer, learn how to punch correctly, and if it still hurts after that get a CAT scan done.
