what would be better for amatuer boxing? shorter intense intervals (involving bursts) or running from 3 to 5 miles at a constant but fast speed.

Both. Can't do the sprint training effectively every day, so the longer runs are there to help your body recover.

Both, you can do a 3 mile run every day, while doing sprinting intervals.
