  • your first sparring match

I think it'd be cool if there was a little thread dedicated to people's first sparring sessions.
    here's mine:
about a year ago I sparred for the first time. We each were about 130. I was waiting for my coach and my partner to get in the ring and as he got in the ring we tapped gloves. as we started I expected for us to easy then he blasted me with a right hand as the bell rung. I gave him a nasty look and jumped on with a mean left to the body. he buckled, and then we were both trading shots, and by the end of round 3, he clearly got the better of them. I won 1 round and he won the other two.

    First sparring match:

Me (146 lbs) vs a guy that was about 6'2" and around 230 lbs. I thought I'd stay on the outside and jab away, but he blasted me a few times. My nose was bloody and my head hurt at the end of the round.

In our gym we switch partners every round. So after that I sparred a guy who was more my size and kept getting hit. He was just way too quick. After that, I got paired up with a solid, muslce built guy but I was too quick for him. I could have smashed him but I just practiced slipping jabs instead.

My face was so bloody by the end of the day. It was great! I sparred again 3 days later.

I stumbled around on chicken legs, afraid for my life, as the guy across from me tried his best to get me comfortable moving and throwing. He tapped me a few times when I made mistakes to let me know, but not so hard as to discourage.

Nothing fierce or crazy. the dude across had a lot of experience and patience and I appreciated it. It was clear I was terrified so it was made enjoyable. Couldn't have been too bad, that was 4 years ago and I'm still doing it today.

Mine was about 2 years ago and I had been going to a small gym in Santa Ana, but never did much else aside from hitting the heavy bag (no trainers or classes). I finally went to another gym and I got in there with the trainer who ran the sparring class. I was about 210lbs and 5'10 (fatty), trainer is like 6'1 160. He kept telling me not to tense up and just focus on defense. I kept blinking and turning away and throwing awkward punches. The trainer was nice enough not to hit me too hard in the head but he did land a few body shots that almost made me puke. I only managed to go 2 rounds that day.

Currently 165 and I can go a whole lot longer than 2 rounds now.

          My first sparring match
          Spring, 2008
I was sparring my trainer, who is about 5'10 and 225lbs(his now 199lbs), compared to my 5'9 and 140ish lbs. We werent throwing anything with bad intentions, though I still got a bruised body. I ate so much jabs(thank god they were landing on my forehead) and left hooks. I did land some right hands after he threw the jab, though I did not know what to do when he started doubling them up. We went 2 rounds that day.
A positive is that I did the best out of my 3 friends (2 quit later on)
The last time we sparred was last month, doing alot better now, countering him alot. Though I dont go after him and follow up with combinations. Cant spar anymore for a year due to dental braces
