  • Speed or Power?

When I'm in the gym my trainer always says I should always focus on speed in amateur boxing, and don't go for power. Is this true, I know it may help you score points but, I have this instinct which makes me want to throw every punch with bad intentions.

Surely if you hit hard you will wear the other fighter down and make him less effective? Or should you go primarily for point scoring or mix it up?

    Your thoughts?

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't power a product of speed and strength? Something like that I guess.

But yeah, I'm not a big guy, and I don't think I'm a hard hitter, so I focus on speed.

Good luck landing anything hard if you aren't fast...

The higher up you go, the quicker the guys you'll see. Speed is essential, power is secondary. You're only gonna be able to land so many solid shots...you need speed to fill in the blanks and score some points.

In the amateurs, a punch whether fast or powerful, counts the same. So you are much better off scoring a volume of points than trying to hit for damage or a knockout.

These exactly, if you don't have speed you will struggle to land anything. When sparring with smaller guys I have a lot of trouble hitting them with anything.

speed kills, the punch that hurts the most, is the punch that you don't see coming. it may sound cliché, but it is TRUE!

power comes with the right technique and plenty of speed, trust me.

always focus on speed and technique, the power will come.

Speed kills. In the amateurs I believeyou only go for the KO if you sense your opponent is hurt, or, there for the taken. Lumbering in with power shots is a dangerous game, your be slower, leaving yourself open for more counters.
