  • coaches n trainers losing fighters

I have been training boxers as a has certified boxing coach for about 3 or 4 years....I am a very hands on coach that invests a lot in my fighters......there seems to be such a lack of focus, dedication and focus amongst our our young people...I have done my share of motivating, supporting, father figuring ,holding hands n lighting fires under butts.....how do u know when its time to cut fighters off, when they keep being irresponsible with ur time and their work outs....I hate cutting people off cause I feel like I'm constantly rebuilding.....I'm tired....any advice or opinions on losing fighters or cutting them off n staying motivated?

    and ive heard

That this is why a lot of boxing trainers become jerks, because they consistently invest their all into individuals that let the down, take them for granted or etc....I don't want to end up like that.

Find a kid or a few that are really dedicated and have proven that to you and really concentrate on them. A good coach is a privilege and look at it as somethings a kid has to earn. If you find kid or two that everything they got then I bet you will feel differently.

Co-signed. Don't invest into everyone. Instead focus on those who've earned it.

the old phrase "you can lead a horse to water but you can not make him drink" holds true to being a trainer. and as a ex-fighter and trainer/scout i have seen and had many young fighters with talent and no dedication and i cut them loose right away because my time is too valuable for that, and maybe with more time under your belt you will stop feeling the need to "baby" a fighter. to learn this game from someone who really knows what they are talking about is an honor and a privilege, and i let every fighter that i train know that fact.
i only invest what the fighter is willing to invest, and if i dont feel that the fighter is giving an effort equal to my effort i give them one more chance and i tell them that everybody has bad days but if they do not understand the dedication needed or are unwilling to make the sacrifice in this killing sport then they do not belong in the ring in the first place.

Very good point from DC. I've been a coach for about 15 years and an international standard amateur prior to that. I always try to keep perspective. If the boxer is not training as they should, then no fights are made for them. If they aren't fighting, and they still aren't motivated to train, then you focus on the other boxers. Ultimately, the sport will weed out that aren't suited, you merely need to help it along a little at times. Don't lose faith Coach, it may be a bumpy road but the pros outweigh the cons. We're in a long haul game!

For the input, it just gets so frustrating at times.....I guess I need to draw a line in the sand.!

What my coach does to people like that is, taps your heart with a fist and says "If it's not in there don't bother coming back" My coach is around 70 years old.

You said that you "hold their hands". In my opinion you can't build a fighting machine if you have to hold their hands, because in the ring they will be all alone. I've tried training some kids/young men. They all come in talking that they will fight anybody because they are just that tough. Put them on the heavybag for 3 rounds, work them hard and its like they've grown breasts and a vagina. Nothing against women but this sport is not for the whiners. As soon as I see the weakness I tell them to lose it quickly and to dig deep. Each time they failed in my eyes and I said to them that I'm done with you. Oh coach, I can do this they say. Give them one more chance and it always ends up the same.

This sport is not for the weak minded. They can have all of the physical strength and talent but you have to work hard and show me that you want it. I will never walk up behind a fighter into the ring representing myself as their trainer if they dont cut it. I spent too long in my own training to disrespect myself like that infront of my peers. If they are ready I will be behind them 100%, win or lose, as long as they gave what they had.

Todays American youth is essentialy weak minded and lazy when it comes to boxing standards. I'll keep looking for the kid with the grit and the heart needed, but truthfully, I don't expect to find one.............Rockin'

X-ellent thread.... I guess that depends, do you live off been a coach? Like the saying goes, you only get what you give. In PR, we dont fall in love with fighters, fighters are like whores.
