  • You guys probably get this a lot, but I need a little advice

So I got into this talk with my friend and as guys, we usually bull**** around and talk crap. In the end, after watching Mickey Ward's movie, we agreed to have a sparring match June 1st. So now I gotta train to box. Is there any shot at all to figure out and train for 5 months to gain any knowledge and be semi ready to spare by June 1st? I'm 220 lbs, 6'0 and am a bit out of shape. My goal is to drop to 200 by the end of Feb and then by the time of the sparing match, get down to 190 lbs with some speed and defense on my side. I plan for the first couple of months to cut weight, gain a bit of muscle, and pick up my hand speed while getting my speed up. Last three months I'll then plan on learning to defend and leg movement.

The guy I'm going against is smaller and lighter. He's in shape, though, but I believe he has never been hit before which I believe will work on my side.

So I'm wondering, if this is possible to semi learn within 5 months, what should I focus on with my training and any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Right, seriously go to a gym for 5 months if you are dead serious about it and hey, you might even keep going there.

stamina stamina stamina!!! there is no point in learning boxing technique if you run out of gas after 1 minute...do some swimming, jump rope and 100m sprints....once you are at a respectable fitness level then work on your boxing technique....my fav bit of equipment is the double end bag....this not only makes you hit a moving target but it also teaches you to get out of the way of counter punches (if done correctly)...

I'm actually planning to in Feb. One of the places I'm thinking about doing an internship is a boxing center for at risk youth. So if I get the internship, I'm planning on asking the trainer to help me out as well as the kids there. I'm just wondering what are some good tips to get in shape and if it is even possible to do within that small time frame.

Thanks! I'll keep that double end bag in mind. And that's really good advice. I figured as much, but wasn't 100% sure. Totally forgot about the swimming, so will be using that in my training.

are you in the uk? if you are they sell double end bags in argos for like £20....you just gotta get rid of the crappy rubber cable it comes with and replace it with rope on the top and bungee cable at the bottom....

heres my set up ( i realised i did it too close to the wall and had to rip the raw plugs out and do it again which was a pain in the ass).

Thanks for that and the video. I'm actually in the US, but I believe my buddy has something like that in his place. I'll see if I can use his or I can probably just go to the shop and get one. Those things always look pretty nice. Thanks again!

220 lol. And yeah, a bit more than a bit out of shape lol. Pretty much just sat around and did nothing when I was out of work and school. I lost like 30 lbs since the start of summer but slacked off the past month or two. Hopeful to get back on track and get down to 200 by the end of Feb and get in shape so I can get 3 really good months of boxing training or I'm going to be screwed.
