  • Amateur Boxing in California

Hey guys I was wondering if any of you were knowledgeable about the amateur boxing scene in California. I've been dabbling in MMA for the past two years but boxing keeps calling me back. I have always wanted to box and have trained for many years but have never fought due to financial issues coming up.

So my question was, "How hard is it to get amateur fights independent of a gym?"

With MMA, it's fairly easy and common for people to fight on amateur/pro cards without even being associated to a big gym. Some guys train at home and then fight.

Any help would be much appreciated.

      Thank you for your advice.

But I'm not a beginner. I've trained for almost 3 years with a former Jr Middleweight Contender who fought Lupe Aquino for the title in the early 90's. I've fought in smokers and sparred guys in my gym. Boxing isn't new to me.

The reason I ask is because I lost my job so I won't be able to pay gym fees. And sure it's not that expensive to train, but it's quite costly when you don't have a job and your car isn't reliable to go drive to the gym all the time.

So again...does anyone know anything on the subject?

so you worked with a guy who was good 15 years ago? cool. youll find a coach with a heart wholl train you for free. talk to promoters of upcoming events, and just straight up talk to local coaches/nearby coaches (or promoters) with good fighters or good cards coming up. its pretty simple. if you dont have a coach youre gonna be preyed on hard. what can ya do? not listen to me i guess.

Believe me, I understand the deal with training independently. I've seen many guys in MMA that come in and get pounded on. But these are beginners. All I was trying to say is that I have a pretty decent skillset and it won't be like throwing someone out to the sharks.

I did contact a few guys I know that fight to see if they could give me some advice. But again, my main question is "How hard is it to get amateur fights independent of a gym?"

Thanks for the advice on how to go about it. But I just want to know if anyone has fought on cards without belonging to a specific gym or anything like that. And if so, was it an easy process?

Like most other states, there are a lot of non-profit gyms that you can go to here in Cali and you can fight as an unattached fighter, which means that you don't represent a gym or club. You might have a better chance getting those type of fights if you have a coach and belong to a gym with good rep.
