I went to a friends boxing class and we did all kinds of cardio in place, he just comes up with different kinds of excercises and keeps us going for 1.5 hours small 15-30 sec breaks for water.

this last monday the routine was
jump rope or do the motions for 10 mins to warn up,
      stretches
      water break
20 pushups, 5 min. jumping rope
20 pushups, 5 min. jumping rope
20 pushups, 5 min. jumping rope
      water break
50 squats from normal squat stop point down to ankles back up to normal stop point
      small strectch break
      50 more of those squats
50 clockwise bobs going real low
      50 counter clockwise bobs
      jump rope 5 mins
      water break
      100 total lunges
      50 180' pivoting lunges
10 mins total flutter kicks and various leg raises and crunches.
      5 last mins jumping rope

after this i was on big ass cloud of steam, my puddle on the floor was steaming when i got up, it was awesome.

that was monday night, its now friday morning and i still feel it, but im not as conditioned as alot of people but well on my way. I feel great for being 6'6" 260lbs and dropping

the least you could do for a great workout is put on a sauna suit and jump rope or act like it and do lots of bodyweight workouts. Just my 2 cents.

I use the eliptical I have at home, while its not as good as running its pretty efficient for me at the age of 35 running is a bit hard on my knees which I have had some trouble with so the eliptical is a pretty good substitute.
