  • some beginner questions

Hey guys I am new to boxing which you
probably get a lot here. I am going to get my
membership after christmas and had a couple
of questions. 1) What size are acceptable in competition or
does it vary? I heard it was 12 to 14 oz. 2) I am thinking about getting 2 the following
pairs of gloves Tuf Wear training gloves for
sparring (16 or 18 oz), Ringside IMF's for
sparring, Title Gel Series, or the Tuf Wear
Super Bag gloves for the heavy bags. I am a
little worried that if I get the Tuf Wear Super Bag gloves there will not be enough padding
since they only come in 12 oz, is this a
problem? 3) Is a trainer completely necessary or can you
just get in the gym do some heavy bags, speed
bags, shadow boxing, and sparring without a
trainer? 4) Can I use my sparring gloves for
competition if i decide to compete in this sport
or do i need to get three pairs of gloves? One
for heavy bags, one for competition, and one
    for sparring/shadow boxing?

      1. Competition gloves are 95% of the time 10oz. Once in a while they'll give you 12oz for some reason.

      2. You don't need two pairs of sparring gloves. One will do. The Ringside IMF gloves are great. 16oz is standard, if you're are a heavyweight you may want the 18oz just for a bit more padding to be kind to your sparring partner.

12 oz gloves for heavy bags is what most people seem to use. Again, if you are a heavyweight, or just a big puncher you may want 14 or even 16oz bag gloves, just for more protection for your hands.

      3. I guess it's not completely necessary, but if you want to compete and not get your butt kicked you'll need a trainer. Copying other boxers and trying to do stuff that you see in instructional videos is no substitute for someone who knows what they are doing watching you and correcting mistakes.

      4. No you can't, you have to use competion gloves for bouts. They're red or blue and have a white part ont he knuckles. But the gloves are provided by the sanctioning body so you don't have to buy your own, and even if you did have your own competition gloves you couldn't wear them. Have to use the gloves they provide.

          Use 16oz for everything.

You can always toughen your knuckles with light heavy bag hitting with just the wraps on....

            +1.....

I some times use bigger gloves to work my arms a bit. But I use 16 oz for every thing. People all the time try to spar me with 14 oz on and I just wont spar them unless they are using 16 0Z.

"People all the time try to spar me with 14 oz on and I just wont spar them unless they are using 16 0Z."

              Why's that?
I spar with 16oz while others spar me with 10-12oz..

The smaller the gloves the harder they crack... Not that I cant take shots but its practice not a real fight. I also spar much larger guys alot aswell. Another thing I like about the 16 is they give you a better work out.

Now I can understand new fighters starting to spar using 10-12 oz gloves but no way would I let a pro or experienced fighter use 10 or even 12 oz on me. Its not about being tough.

I just see no reason to use 10,12, or 14 for other then catching mits and working the bag. But hey thats just my opinion bro.

                  U sure???

if he trains in 10's and then spars in 16's, he gonna get tagged constantly cos he arms wont be able to handle the added weight suddenly n his arms arent gonna b able to retract back fast enough to defend if thier not used to that weight.

just use 16oz for everything, theres no harm in that

thanks a lot everyone this really helps. I think that i am going to go with the 16 oz gloves for everything. One last question, what 16oz. gloves should i get for heavy bag work? I was going to get the Tuf Wear Super Bag's but they only come in 12 oz.
