  • Need tips against this tall guy

I sometimes spar against this tall guy at my gym and he always sticks out his left jab arm out to keep me at bay and to deal light jabs at my face and when i slip inside his sticking out arm he takes a step back and simultaneously hit with his right and mostly lands on my head!
I find this very frustrating that im actually the technical boxer of us two but yet im unable to awnser his way of fighting.
How would u deal with this sticking out frontarm fighter!?

    THE TALL BOXER
Against a tall boxer with good movement and a good left jab it is vital you get to the inside position to work . Otherwise you will have problems from the word go and he will keep you at range on the back foot , stopping you from entering his space .
How do you get inside his long reach ?
Parry lay back , push away are some common approaches adopted, but these usually prove ineffective .
Slpping and rolling are the probably most effective.
When facing someone taller, you must be able to slip and roll to gain the inside position .The best method is slipping because it leaves both hands free to counter

      Advice for a tall boxer

you a have to be faster than he is... and you almost have to dump combination punching till the later rounds.

1st step make him fear your jab. make sure it's a snapping jab just outside his distance. move into range with using your feet. Jab hard to his body early and often! then when you have him thinking body go to head. make him guess high low. then i would use feints to set up other shots. feints are a cheap mans jab when you have him thinking speed.

2nd when he jabs make sure you keep a tight guard. with your left, pat his jab with your right and then when you feel his hand moving back throw your right over top of his. if he blocks high use your left hook to the body and then slip out.

against a tall fighter you have to eat his body up. body shots are key. but be sure not to overreach, take your time and let him walk you down but stay quick on your toes to move and spin off the ropes. try to keep a measured distance.

if you want to see what I'm talking about a textbook fight to watch is floyd mayweather vs diego corralas. i took what i learned and applied it to my sparring.

break him down with body shots.
      dictate distance.
make him adjust and fear throwing his jab.

as you get late in rounds then open up the combo's always finishing to the body. when he thinks body then go head.

If he's faster than you. Your going to have to use timing and power.

If he's slower then use speed in spots, and ring distance.

footwork is key to setting it all up.

let me know how it goes! trust me i was thinking the same thing 4 months ago now i have this guy I spar with under more control. He always tries to retaliate after I land but slip out at an angle, never backwards. If he takes a step back I attack. if it's in the middle I use speed and range and keep a high guard most times.

      Good luck bro!

Try this............ With your right arm smack his glove to the side, turn a short right hand on him from where your glove is at that time and roll to your right working hooks. Similar to what you do against a south paw with your jab hand and his. Sounds weird but it will work...............Rockin'

Coach or trainer must show you in person to be productive and show different ways to face the jab + punishment!!

If he's taller, be faster. If he's faster, be stronger. If he's stronger, be smarter. Etc.

step in far enough when u slip while punching in the slipping motion. when u slip, step out forward towards the OUTSIDE of his sticking out left arm, dragging a hook inside to his body or come over with a overhand right to this chin.

when he does come with a right straight to u, u can catch it with ur left and counter with an overhand right. don't think in lines, just keep the distance close and keep switching angles on him. u have to beat him when he has to switch directions towards u.

be slippery, move around and counter hard and often whenever u can.

Surely top class feinting has to play a major role? A height (and therefore reach) advantage is only an advantage if the shorter guy cannot initiate the taller guy's lead. Effective feint, either foot/body or hand, followed by any defensive action (block/parry) or body movement (slip/roll) and combined with a move in and shot....pure gold - reach advantage nullified!

The ability of an individual to cancel out the physical advantages of an opponent is, for my money, the very essence of boxing.

I'm not sure how much taller he is, but block his jab, faint him a lot. Dont let him time you coming in or you'll be eating uppercuts for a while.

Use your left hand to smack his left arm HARD, down and away. A left hook motion. Then throw the overhand right. Kinda a 3-2, but that slap will often turn his upper body, making your right hand land flush on the nose/chin.

Catch his jab and step in with a HARD double jab. Or even a single jab. I got murdered in my first fight because my jab kept getting countered by a much shorter guy.

Catch his jab and throw the right hand. It's all one motion, like your straight right intercepts his jab on it's way to the target.

Slip the jab to the inside, come up with a left uppercut to the body-overhand right-left hook to the body.
