  • Boxing Gyms in Long Island

Anyone know of top notch boxing gyms in Long Island? If you know the price too, that would be very helpful.

In the brookhaven area there are a few gyms. Heres my opinion

1.Atlantic-veterans memorial boxing club: A good, cheap gym, with great, quality sparring and talent there. Its in Shirley, by sunrise highway and william floyd parkway. Owner is Mike Murphy, a former pro, who has good knowledge of the sport, and knows alot of tricks of the trade. Yearly price was 270 a year last i checked(at least for my age group) and if ur younger/older its around the same, give or take. Theyve got two rings, a good size ring, and a smaller ring used for kids and infighting/bodysparring/mitt drills.
One of the more annoying things is getting the owner to train you personally, but he is busy with alot of good fighters so its understandable. He also [I]makes[I] you do his class, no matter what your experience level, except for 2 or 3 guys. If you dont participate in his class workout, which includes little kids, hell scream at you like a kid, which is also annoying. Its also only open at around 5:00 or 5:30 pm to about 11 most of the time so hours are kinda tight but overall a solid gym to learn your craft.

2.Heavy Hitters boxing Gym: This one is in Bohemia and its a very nice looking gym. I havent been there in a while, but last time i was there, the equipment was top notch, very nice looking big ring, plenty of space and mirrors to shadowbox, jump rope, etc. The owner is Kristian vasquez, hes a pretty cool guy, pretty funny too. They have average to decent boxing knowlege there. The trainers are pretty friendly and knowlegdable, but the better ones are usually busy with elite amatuers/pros. Its a great place to start if ur intimidated by the sport, or if ur a kid, very family friendly. There are several competitive and competiing amateurs and even a few pros too. The hours are about the same as Atalantic, like 6 to about 9, but the gym sometimes gets cleared out for other classes such as the womens class.
The biggest drawback to the gym is the price. Last i checked, about a year and a half ago, it was 90 a month just for regular gym use, and i doubt it has decreased. for intruction its like 120 a month and that doesnt include reg gym use, unless u wanna cough up another 30 for 150 a month. And i dont know if they have gotten anymore trainers, but last i checked the only guy who worked with anybody taught no defense was trying to mold everyone into a rocky marciano regarless of height/weight/physical attributes/etc. But these are small gripes, overall youll get good sparring, a good clean gym to train in, they do shows every once in a while for ppv fights/ amateur shows, pretty good gym if u wanna break into the sport comfortably.

3.Bodyshot boxing club: this is by port jefferson and it is a good, fairly prices gym. its about 50 a month i think, theres a suprsing amount of good competitive fighters who train there, and they are brand new so they are probably hungry to prove themselves in future competitions. That means its probably easy for them to take you on if you show the dedication. The owner is Eric Davidson, a pro, who comes off as a no-nonsense kinda guy, pretty cool though. He knows how to push guys past thier limits and he wont baby you if your feeling tired/fatigued which is good. The gym has about 6 bags/ one speedbag, and a somewhat smaller ring, but still usable(plus you can learn on infight easier which alot of amateurs seem to be mssing).
Ive only been there a few times and I have a pretty good workout each time, my only complaint is the space, if it ever gets even a little packed out there, you can barely shadowbox/skip without bumping into someone, althoug he does make good use of the space he has. This is not that big a deal though cause although the hours are like 4-10 or something like that, thats better than 6 to 10 and these hours are pretty dependable, Ive never seen him late to open, and i cant say that for the rest of these guys.

4.Royals boxing Gyms Now this gym has pretty good space, probably even the best, a very good size ring, probably bigger that all 4 previous and they have pretty good equipment, exept a mirror and a round timer(WTF?) The owner is a chill guy when i met him, hes listed as Jean LaForest, and his boxing knowledge seemed a bit questionable when i met him to be honest. Im only an amateur with very limitted experience and i felt like we knew pretty much the same things, although i shoudlnt judge i only been there like once. Its also a very new gym(actually very close to bodyshot bc like walking distance=2 mins lol its on the same road) They got bags, gloves, and plenty of sparring gear. The hours are actally outstanding, hes there from about 8 am to 8 or 9 at night, except sunday. the guy puts in hours. Since the fighters who are going there have pretty much been going there since the gym opened, there are mostly novices, but i imagine if they stick around and compete there can be a good level of talent and sparring in the future. The only guy who works there(i last checked this summer) was the owner, so individual attention may be hard cause its only him and im sure he has alot to juggle, but then again there are so much hours to go there that you can prob find a time that its empty/ or a rush hour if you want sparring.
The gym drawbacks are pricing(which last i checked was about 300 every 3 months, dont quote me i forgot exacltly how much but i remember it being expensive, i just paid the 20 dollar day fee) and the lack of boxing knowledge in the atmosphere. IMO gyms are more confortable to go to when there a people everywhere, amateurs, former amatuers, pros, trainers, fans, fighters parents, just talking boxing and information being spread. But it has its pros and its cons.

    5. Soleil Fitness Club This is a regular gym that has a ring with boxing equipment and a boxercise program in selden. I have never trained here for boxing, but its equipment is outstanding(obviously, its a fitness gym) but the problem with most fitness gym boxing clubs, is that the emphasis is on the workout, not on being a better fighter. One of their guys came over to atlantic once time to fight one of the atlantic guys, forgot thier names but he looked totally lost against the atlantic fighter who was not very skilled, but had many rounds of sparring under his belt and more of a fighters mentality. Id only go here is you strictly wanna just get in shape.

Theres also Long Island Boxing Club, Lumber Jack Lows, fitness thru boxing, and a bunch North shore fight club, and a bunch of other places closer to nassau, which a probably better the closer to the city that you get. These are the only gyms i have personal experience/ knowlegdge about. IDK where u live, but i hope this helps.

Id check out freeport PAL. Its on 100 parsons avenue in freeport obviously. IDK anything about them, except that they had a 141 novice finalist in the 2010 NY golden gloves in Patrick Day, a skilled and talented fighter.

        heres a vid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a9w8xUatRT8

Theres also BCBA, ive never heard of it, but its in lindenhurst and its listed on the registered clubs site. Long Island Boxing Gym is also in deer park, and i hear its pretty good, although ive never been there. The website however, lists some expensive prices like 140 a month (http://www.longislandboxing.com/services.html)

heres a vid for LIBG, it seems nice enough :http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YBphC-O4h0A

Heavy hitters is also closer to seaford i think than bodyshot is if you just get on highway 27/powmia memoral/sunrise you can drive straight there.

Theres a few clubs also in westbury and hempstead, heres a list
