  • Late starter

    Hey guys,

I consider myself a late starter in the sport. I started boxing at 18 at uni, but I was thinkin too much about women, drinkin and smokin so I lost a chance of training at one of the best Uni boxing clubs in the UK. We had everything there, gloves, bags, a ring etc etc I was very talented, picked up things real quick but my lack of training messed it all up.

Now i´m 25 years old, I´m living in brazil at the moment and I started training seriously since about 6 months ago. I cut down crap food, stopped smoking, drinkin wayyy less and training 2 times a day. I was weighing 83 kgs, I´m going down to 75 kgs for my first Amateur Fight in Brazil.
I feel I can become a national champion...I really do. I´ve been sparring with lighter national champions and I seem to hurt them even though they´re slicker.

Do you guys think It´s too late do give it a go? I mean i´ll be fighting people that have been boxing since 10, 12 years of age. The fact i´m italian motivates me..I can be the first Italian Brazilian champion in history lol.

It's clearly what you want to do, so you should go for it. If you don't at least try, then you'll have to live with that regret. What if you didn't bother, then at 28 you again decided you wanted to give it a go? You'd be wishing to turn back the clock to get those extra 3 years back.

If you're driven and dedicated, you could still give 10 years of your life to boxing. That's gotta be better than waking up at 40 and regretting never having tried.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

I started boxing at 16 which is kinda late but u just gota forget that and go ahead and give it 100%, the more time u spend wishing you started earlier the more time u wasted, after a cupple of years training HARD and learning at a faster pace u wount even rember u started late. Marciano began boxing at 23
Antonio Tarver turned pro at 29 (or 28)
James "Bonecrusher" Smith started at 28

Age is just a number. If you feel that you can fight hard and compete, and you train hard, then you can accomplish anything. Many times promoters and managers want "young" fighters who are inexperienced in the ways of the world as they are easier to take advantage of.

If you are good, you can fight into your late 30's, having a 12-15 year career.

That isn't bad. Sure it'd be nice to have those extra years of experience, but nothing is impossible. There are a lot of guys who have been fighting professionally since 18, and been boxing since age 12, and you watch them and they just suck.

If a person is good at something, they're good at it, regardless of age.

It all depends on what is your goal and what is your natural talent.

If you want to be an Olympic Champion or top professional contender, it might be too late.

If you want to train, fight, and see how far you can go, and are not worried as to whether you can earn a living off of fighting, then I guess it's never too late.

If you are some kind of boxing sevant with great natural skills and athletic ability, then you're still in the game.

Just have a go, what have you got to lose?
And if you are talented and work hard, it might not be too late. The fact you started late means you won't carry the myriad of nagging injuries that most fighters carry by the time they are in their late teens/early 20s. You could fight well into your 30's.

I know a guy who started late (he was about 26 or 27 or something) and he had natural talent in abundance, and went on to have 60+ amateur fights, and won a bronze medal at the Commonwealth games.

Think about it...Train for another few months until you have your first fight....Keep fighting for a few year until you are 28 or 29...And if you have the talent and work hard and things are going well, you can go pro and have a shot.

                    Not too late!
