  • Slipping: tips on improving speed and effectiveness?

I would like to know anyone's tips on working slips, I want to improve my movement dramatically. Don't bother mentioning slip rope etc I have a gym I go to. I want the at home tips, stuff I can do for 30 mins while I have down time around the house etc.
stretches anything anyone would like to add that would benefit my slips I am all ears!

The only way that you will get good at slips is to sharpen the eyes. All of the excercises are good like walking the rope but to truely get good at slipping you need to be in the ring with real puncescoming at you. Anybody can slip shots while working the pads but it's a whole new story when you are in the ring throwing down. Gotta learn how to react in the trenches. So spar, spar and spar some more..............Rockin'

Try this at the beginning. Go in there and don't throw a single punch. Use your legs to move and your eyes to slip. I used to have my trainer glove up and chase me around the ring while I moved and slipped his punches when I was younger. Remember, do not throw back. When I first learned to roll punches I did this against Bronco McCart. I was just about to turn pro and Bronco had maybe 6 pro fights at the time. I didn't throw a single punch really, just used my eyes and concentrated on defense. It really, really helped. Good luck bro..........Rockin'

All the above advice is great. A slip ball at the gym or at home will give you additional practice. I would also suggest just slipping imaginary punches at home while watching tv, cooking, in the shower, anywhere and as often as possible.

I see a lot of boxers who have trouble with slipping because they aren't able to maintain balance while slipping. Then they drop their hands to lower the center of gravity.

Not a problem if your last name is Mayweather or if your nickname is Sweet Pea, but for most of us that's putting your chin at risk, and keeps you from throwing counter punches.

its the same principle doing it on the mitts or in the ring, however, fighter has to have the experience to feel comfortable and do it in the ring. As you said, its a matter of practice.

When I started training my slips, it was hard to anticipate the punches, but even harder to keep calm and actually see the punches being thrown. I would always bring my head down and look at the floor or look away as an natural instinct to avoid being punched, big mistake, never take your eyes off the opponent, you have to practice long enough so that you don't close your eyes or look away, stay calm, and actually see the punches coming at you, then react accordingly. its easier said than done.

                  One,

Work on your core, a strong core is obviously the best for upper body.

bike sit-ups, half sit-ups, full sit-ups, leg extensions, back exercises, front plank, L and R side planks. do them till you can't. then do them till you can't again.

                  Two

Work on your foot placement when slipping then your hand placement. your feet need to be placed to main movement and balance. if your in your boxing stance and someone comes over and pushes you on either shoulder, do you fall over? Maintain balance!

Hand placement is key to maintain a tight package also to maintain good defense. It helps if you mistime a slip your not caught with your hands down or in a place that leaves you open.

                  Three

range of motion is key also to much motion and your off balance and open for counters two little and well your getting hit. you should be slipping about your heads width side to side considering that is the target.

                  goodluck!

I find a few rounds of sharp shadow boxing but with no punches just emphasis on head movment, footwork and changing angles realy help, visulising an opponent whilst doing this as well. Then once you done a 2 or 3 rounds of this shadow box another few rounds but with punches as well and see if you can still keep the good movment going, again visulise an opponet whilst doing this. Also when you slip a shot try and come back with a counter punch, as you dont get any points for just slipping. Good luck with the training.
