  • How do you punch better with your left hand?

I got a buddy in the gym who I help with pad work, etc and he can't really punch with his left for ****, he can throw straight punches with some pop, but his hooks are so weak and look so amateurish. He fights in the southpaw stance because of this, even though hes an orthodox fighter.

I've tried getting him to work on strengthening the left arm, hitting with it more and in general getting him to use it more to do everyday tasks to work the muscles more, but not much has changed.

Whats the science behind getting some technique and power in your left if you've hardly ever used it?

    Any help would be appeciated.

Technique, if you've got that somewhat down already and it's still weak then I'd suggest using a weighted glove on the left, what size gloves do you guys train with? I use strictly 16oz. Either way, this is a constant learning curve so just use everything and keep at it, one day at the gym is one step forward, one day missed is 5 steps back, that's the way I see it.

practice writing with your left, brush your teeth with your left aswell as your right and obviously just be more active with your left hand in shadowboxing/sparring/training

Stop focusing on arm strength and start learning and performing correct technique using your legs, your torso, and your upper body and shoulders, this is where the power comes from...

What many people fail to realise is that when a left hook is thrown, the body weight is driven on to the back leg as a result of the initial thrust from the front leg. On the myboxingcoach.com website, there are individual videos which describe 3 types of left hook; short range, mid range and long range. I'm sure if you check these out you'll be able to offer some effective guidance to your buddy.

            Cheers

            Fran

Focus on correct technique and the power will come eventually.

I'm a converted rightie, changed to southpaw when i was like 15-16 and for the longest time my left was much weaker than my right, it was just because i never completely rotated when i threw my left, it was good enough for my trainers but not enough for me.

I kept working on it and now i can say my left is on par, if not stronger than my right.
