Anyone have any advice for dealing with shin splints? It is really effecting my boxing, running and basketball workouts. It has been like this for a couple of weeks now and I can't seem to get rid of them.
THanks!
I used to get them really, really bad. But I kept pushing through and eventually they just went away. I never get them anymore.
You need the minimum of 2 weeks rest, and try and run at least half of the time on grass. It's unusual that you would just get this out of the blue, have you just started a new exercise or changed your routine lately? If so try and ease yourself into your new training regime as going in hard straight away is nearly always the reason for shin splints.
There is tons of shin splint threads in here. Mainly because people new to boxing think they can pound the pavements for five miles when they barely ever do any exercise. It takes quite a while to get to this level. Even then you have to be careful how you run and what footwear you use.
The earlier comment from the guy about barefoot running is also true, I've not tried but I have read studies by people who say that running barefoot is much better for your joints and bones because you don't try and run so hard and slam your foot down when you land. Obviously most people don't want to run in a city with no shoes so just make sure you wear a decent pair of running shoes, it makes a world of difference from running in regular shoes.
hey man, i've had shin splints, reason being that my calf muscles were too tight. so i had to stretch those.
whatever the reason, u need to rest them up man. shin splints are because of too much pressure on ur shins. u need to stretch ur leg muscles and give them time to heal. whenever ur resting, put ur legs up, let them rest up.
good way to stretch ur calf muscles: stand close in front of a wall. put ur toes up high against the wall as flat as u can (facing the ceiling) with the heel touching the floor. now as ur heel is as close to the wall as possible, try to stand as close to the wall as u can. u should start to feel a stretch in ur calfs. but do it slowly, don't wanna rip anything..
hope it makes sense. good luck bro.

And, you can also stretch your shins by standing up against the wall, put both hands on the wall with one foot flat (about 2 feet away from the wall) and the other foot stretched all the way back.... then take the foot that's all the way back and point the toe towards the ground and stretch forward. You can feel the pull in the shin, slowly push down with your knee. You should alternate between stretching the calf and the knee. Ice helps too to take the swelling down. After your shin splints heal (you should let them heal before you start running again) it is very important to do these stretches before you start running.
Good luck.
