  • Any tips for activating the hips?

    Hi All

First post here, so hopefully not a ****** question.

Looking for tips, ideas, training strategy or exercises on how to improve hip activation when throwing Hooks and Uppercuts, I am what you call all arms.

My hooks and uppercuts are absolute dire as I only throw from the arms so no real full body activation.

I just cant seem to have a natural feeling hook or upercut when trying to use the hips.

Does anyone have any good exercises or ideas that will force me to start using the hips, I know one suggestion was to use exercise bands, find one that is too tough to hook with using arms alone and practice hooking while activating the hips to move the band.

    Cheers

Sounds like your body just needs to become comfortable with the correct mechanics. Repetition repetition repetition, and slowly to start with so you're getting the form right. If your hips don't want to send you forward, you might want to try letting them bring you back first.

Here's something that helped me when I was having a hard time with the lead hook. Start off standing with the punch already thrown. I'll call this position A. For the lead hook your arm should be bent at 90 degrees, lead arm shoulder protecting your chin, rotated on the ball of your lead foot, knees slightly bent, hip turned, eyes forward.

From that position, return to guard (position B) quickly and smoothly.
Now stop and reset back into position A. Take your time, and consider the check list I just gave you. Is your body all lined up right? Now quickly pop back into position B, your guard. Repeat this a million times. Slowly it will become smoother and smoother until rather than needing to take time to reset into position A, you'll find it easier to simply throw the hook with proper form. Hope that helps!

what you want to do is stand in front of a mirror and start with the basics, you are a novice so starting with the basics is the best avenue to use, hold your hands up and throw a jab throw another jab, swing to the left throw a hook.while throwing the hook move your foot in a swivel like manner to get your hip to follow you, come around step back feint right, move to your left again feint forward come back throw a right

You are a f.ucking spastic. How the hell is all this 'jab, jab, feint' bollocks gonna help him to learn how to throw a hook? He didn't ask for shadowboxing tips.

Follow Soju's advice, keep things slow and just concentrate on the technique.

it seems you need the basics too, before you can run you have to walk,so before you have an effective hook you must properly know how to swing the hip,the hip is key and by stepping to the side and feinting here and there an d swinging back you will be able to learn this concept,
