Amateur uses should roll.

Shawn!! Tried posting a few videos of examples of things like the shoulder roll. He does it terribly and half of the things he does are wrong and unorthodox. People need to quit trying to mimic other fighters and fight YOUR style.
Secondly, the other kid got in two scoring blows during his "shoulder" roll, which was more of a wiggle back and forth with a limp left hand.Comment

What are the amateurs for? Experience. If it works for him, then let him use it. We didn't see the whole fight. Maybe he used it more than once and it worked for him. If it didn't work, and he's smart enough, he knows not to use it again. Why not just give it a try and not regret using it? That's all I'm saying.
but if youre trying to win fights in the amateurs you should really figure that technique out first because if you dont you will get hit a lot..the same thing with the philly shell, use it in sparring until you have it down before you use it in competition. thats just my opinion..you can see the guy obviously used it in sparring because he does a decent job actually but its just not good enough yet to use it in competition thats just my opinion.Comment

so why attack me then. if thats what he wants to do then good for him.

Copped a couple of lefts and didnt really look in a position to throw much back. But yeah... gotta give these things a try. Personally I find it kinda hard to shoulder roll with headgear on, I only feel comfortable when I can really tuck my chin tight behind my shoulder. Gotta work on it though...Comment

That was pretty dope. He just gotta keep practicing it and he'll get better with it. Floyd didn't use that countering defense that much when he was in the amateurs. He started doing it when he became a pro. It's good though because he's doing it early. Not everyone can do that defense. It's hard, especially against guys with fast hands and know what they're punching at. Mike Tyson makes that peek-a-boo defense look easy to fight out of lol. I started in that stance but I was too stationary. Style is way different now.Comment

to each their own.. me personally i dont use too much of the shoulder roll.. i use a high and tight guard .. whn i fight guys with their lead hand down with that shoulder roll kind of defense i land a the right hand frequently and am successful with bringing the pressure..Last edited by JoHnNyBoXeR; 08-29-2010, 12:29 AM.Comment
