maybe you should go back to bowling or something you dont know ****

if you see an opportunity to knock somebody out then punch thru the target whether its the head or the body. dont be dumb enough to just throw snappy punches to the head and powerful shots to the body. thats good enough if you box ******s that never fought before

Here's a nice KO for you, although I'm sure you'll come back and tell me that Julian Jackson wasn't a KO puncher either, right?

first off he hit him on the button secondly he hit him with a counter, ali could have knocked him out given the same circumstances...ohh wait he did, see ali vs liston...

any ways fine punch through people and see how many ko's you get.

not that jackson wasnt a ko puncher he had a whicked downward right that nailed the brain and caught the button on the way out.

You should always throw powerful shots less your setting some thing up or conserving strength, though no need to punch through anything just close your fist moments before impact and the tensioning of your muscles creating inelasticity will dig into the target naturally, where as if you try to punch through you end up pushing the target instead of digging into it.

Appreciate all of the advice, soo thus far here's what I've put together for myself.

So one thing I agree with all the way = body blows going deep all the time. Snappy to the head also seems good. Personally I really like using left hooks and jabs as a counter and when I use those to counter I always follow through. This way I can keep him sending in only singles or outright stop that first punch from happening and disrupt his rhythm. His head snaps back and he loses enough balance to make defense a lot more manageable. I've always stuck to that in sparring unless the height difference is very apparent. If it's just doing combos though.. snappy punches sounds right so a hit can actually have more likely a chance of connecting. Plus with the helmet and all makes sense to go for that big target and rack up the points. If there's an apparent opening that can't be closed in time or the opponent is stunned etc. then more punching through depending.

Looking at what you guys wrote a combination of the two looks like the best and logical way. Just annoys me that the two gyms have such different extreme points of view on punching. Maybe part of that was to make me take up a certain style? idk. The trainer who recommended following through has a pretty good reputation around here.. just the total contradiction made me go :S wut dah heel

Thinking about the whole KO and push over thing, if you knocked the guy unconscious "and" knocked him into a more awkward position with the +head-length - while it may have taken him 8 seconds to get up from that knockdown with a solid snappy punch that extra heads length may extend his get-in-fighting-stance time to past 10 seconds. Although if it's a clean lights out I guess he might turn himself into a pretzel somehow anyways..

Aye Ruby that's how I do each punch, just for my power punches that make the biggest impact I recall my lax:tense ratio being pretty off in comparison to snappy as I put my body fully into it... I've got snappy punches that go through 1 head length.. (my counter left-hook and jab) and my power punches almost always go 1-head length through. Combos are mostly surface impact/snappy for fast combos. I dig deep for my midsection left hook (I LOVE that one, it feels so good on the body and the uppercut(I believe =.=) bag) and it works great. Haven't been digging deep enough for the body with the other punches I think though (others I jumble in there more for variety when it comes to body blows) so I guess I'll adjust things a bit there.

Aye always keeping punches at their snappiest and never laxing too much on power was emphasized by that first trainer (follow that advice and works for me). Second trainer was more into the sneaky trapping business with weak to strong punches. Not as much of a fan of that but kinda need to do it anyways.

Repeated a few things to summarize shiz but yeah, do I have the right idea or did I screw up somewhat/a lot/entirely? D:

The coach who advised you to pull back immediately upon impact probably did so because he feels it's more beneficial for the amateur style, i.e all speed, zero power.
