I want to know, how your train your punches for speed?

    I consider since I'm not a boxer,but streetfighter/martial artist.
I do alot of advance plyometrics push-ups and pull ups.Take a light dumbell
and punch for 10 reps for speed:jabs uppercuts, and hooks.

I've seen this thread probably 10 times around here. Some of the most respected members of this forum, I dont think any of them are around anymore, agreed that punching with light dumbells and shadowboxing at full speed improves your speed in combination with plyos and weight training.

I can't take anyone who describes themselves as a streetfighter seriously.

        Agreed.

And also agreed with the above, shadowboxing with both light weights and nothing is probably the most important speed developer for me. Personally I also like doing the speedbag at the end of the night- teaches you to move your hands fast and accurately when already gassed.

your never going to be able to punch faster with a dumbell in your hand then you could with out. so your not really training for speed shadow boxing with weights, you train for acceleration which can benefit you in one of 2 ways.

soo now that youve shadow boxed for a little with weights you get that boosted feeling like your hands are lighter, this feeling only last for a little bit so you should allways shadow box at the very least 1 round with out any weight at all to help you take advantage of that feeling and get your body used to moving alittle faster.

so now when your shadowing with nothing you have the choice of putting more resistance in the punch, see like when you punch your pushing off the ground and forcing the weight up to your fist but really your just creating a series of circles at joints building resistance and creating more force at the next point untill your at your shoulder where your body's moving forward and your shoulders moving back then your shoulder closes the circle similar to the end of a whip and fires the force down your arm. so by improving your acceleration you can increase the resistance at each joint making a faster top speed punch that takes the same amount of time to throw.

or when your shadow boxing you can work on your rotational speed, since you are able to accelerate faster you should then be able to throw faster at the same top speed thus enabling you to go from one shot to the next shot faster increasing the over all speed of your combos but none of the power or top speed.

you can work on both but i wouldnt recommend it at the same time or in the same shadow round.

Get yourself one of those resistance suits that Chad Dawson trains with.
