Well obviously from making your shoulders and back absorb shock from the bag it would make them increase their mass. Just don't overdo it or you'll loose a lot of speed.

...Please explain how you would LOSE your speed hitting a heavy bag...? I can't wait to hear you explain your theory.

Joey, keep up the good work. To answer your question, yes to a certain extent. I'm sure there are many other factors like push ups and pull ups if you are doing them.

By making both ones arms and shoulder absorb shock over and over and over again, you will gain mass that WILL affect your speed. Of course, this can be a good thing or a bad thing depending on how you box and in what weight league.

I'm surprised this is a serious question...you know; being a BOXING forum and all I figured you would at least know what results to expect from using a heavy bag

              Stop. Right now.

We need to sticky a thread that will properly inform people about this myth.

It is not a myth. There was a study done in one of the boxing books I have that took a class of boxers/martial artists and split them into two groups. One group would just shadowbox for a month, the other group would hit the heavy bag for a month. In the end, the ones who hit the heavy bag lost significant speed but gained a lot of power, and the shadowboxers lost significant power but improved their speed greatly. Both have to be done equally to maintain speed and power at a maximum.

Kevin Rooney speaks a little on the subject by saying "Think in terms of combination punching. It's how big, heavy guys like Floyd Patterson and Mike Tyson got their hands moving quick as **** and their combinations flowing like ****, without the resistance of a bag or the impact of hitting an opponent to affect your punches."

It's just not well known or believed by many people.

                    It's laughable.

Anyway, working heavy bag will develop your shoulders and back, but only moderatly.
