The OFFICIAL benefits of other sports on BOXING THREAD

I have been playing baseball for the past year straight and I have not been able to box as much. I am lucky if I can make it to the boxing gym once a week. My position in baseball is general outfield(left, center and right field). I have noticed that since playing alot of baseball in the past year that my speed has gotten alot better running wise and stamina wise.

I used to barley be able to do 10 sprints but now I can do 10-15 2-3 times a week. I also noticed that my hand eye coordination has gotten alot better, my lower body is also more explosive. And last but not least my right hand has gotten alot more conditioned and explosive(from throwing and sometimes in the outfield you might have to throw all the way home).

I have not fought in a year but I am sparring once a week and im not as sharp as I was when I was in the gym several times a week, but I can deffinetly tell the difference between my body before and now. I am at 160 and 5'9 1/2. When I was training full time, I fought at 152. so I am not far from my fighting weight but at the same time I have my power.

Please share your experiences with other sports benefiting your boxing and body.

I played pro football (soccer), the conditioning helps immensely. For a start anyone who is good at football should have good footwork without a doubt. Footballers have the best foot coordination than any other athletes. Secondly it helps your foot speed, leg strength, agility, flexibility and balance. Lastly to play a 90 minute football match you need very good fitness so therefore it builds up your stamina enough so that going 12 rounds will be no problem on your legs.

For example, Sergio Martinez was also a professional footballer and you can see how athletic he is and how it has benefitted his style of boxing.

Martial Arts, not gonna say which style per say because each style has its benefit but the biggest benefit I get is the flexibility which helps the movments to be smooth and keeps you sharp.

For example judo/wrestling would help you againts pressure guys and makes you less burnt out when someone ties up on you.

Tai-chi/chi kung helps with breathing, relaxing and turns pacing/conserving energy in to a science to through the science of breathing

some good karate/kungfu/various forms of kickboxing type martial arts would help you harden up and the excersise such as iron hand training will make your fist feel like steel so you be less suspetible to hand breakage.

Yoga can be good too but for me I perfer a martial artist who knows how to box or a boxer that respects martial arts because they go hand to hand together very very well

I play a lot of handball. Helps with hand/eye coordination and footwork(mostly lateral).

I read that Tyson used to play handball as well. His manager, legendary player Jim Jacobs introduced him to the sport.

Personaly, I'm not sure soccer really helped me. From what I've seen though baseball players learning to box tend to have powerful hooks with their dominant hand, though that's just based on the like 3 that I know.
