There are two trainer at my gym that tell me two different things. One tells me to stay at arms length and punch, they other tells me to keep on getting closer and pushing the bag farther. How should I move around the bag, sometimes I feel awkward while moving.

How to hit a Heavy Bag?

Mix it up, hit the bag from distance and move around it imagining you are hitting your opponant and then moving out of the way, and then get in close to the bag and hit it and push it to practise punching on the inside.
There is no fixed way to hit the bag, just change it up depending what you goals are....

well you can hit it move closer and keep distance. like when you hit it it should move away from you because your hitting it so then you should move closer but making sure to keep the same distance and push it further instead of just waiting for it to come back to you.
in fightings just a different distance though with in fighting you want to always keep the distance tight. likes as mentioned above theres the waiting for the bag to come back in your distance and picking your shots, you never really want this with in fighting. when practicing that you should stay on the bag like, as recommended to me, "a pit bull on a pant leg".
where as with on the out side, like your coaches recommend, you pretty much always want to keep the distance at the end of your punch, and you can pick your shots waiting for the bag to come around, or you can follow the bag "like a pit bull on a pant leg" but you still have to keep it at the edge of your reach/end of your punches.
Im guessing one coach recommends you always follow the bag and keep the distance, and the other coach only cares about you keeping the distance and dosnt care as much if your following the bag or picking your shots when it comes around.(neither really saying anything about in-fighting)
I really dont think it matters whether you pick your shots or you just follow the bag around, in-fight or stay on the out side, distance is whats really important and you should just develop a sense of when to use which while sparring and grow accustom to all of them from shadow boxing and bag work.
maybe if you really want it cleared up ask your coaches.Last edited by Spartacus Sully; 07-31-2010, 11:27 PM.
