Could someone explain what this is?

    High intensity interval training.

the process of exercising then taking a break over and over again which tricks your body into using fat as an energy source when it should be using carbs but since your body cant break down fat into energy anywhere near as easily or quickly as it can carbs your brain releases a form of human growth hormones that work as a catalyst Which causes fuel to be broken down much less efficiently but much more quickly.

Short bursts of high intensity exercise, then rest, then another burst, then rest.

An example would be tabata sprints. Sprint 20 seconds as fast as you can then rest for 10, sprint 20, rest 10 until you've done 8 sets total.

You can do other types, sprinting, using a stationary bike or airdyne etc, mix up the work and rest times. But you want to be getting your heart rate up close to your max hr, then get it down during the brief rest period the get it back up again. When you're finished the session you should be spent and need to lay on the ground for a couple minutes haha.

Good thing to do a couple times per week in addition to regular longer distance runs. You need to work the aerobic and anaerobic systems.
