  • Newbie Seeking Training advice

I'm not sure if I'm in the right forum -but I'm taking classes at a boxing gym -we do bag workouts and take turns drilling with the instructor (no ring time in my future). I'm in my late 30's and trying to get back in shape after having kids a couple years ago. I go to classes once per week and in between do spin workouts, pilates and weights. I started in January of this year.

So my question - my thumb, my index finger 2nd joint are getting pretty sore. My knuckles took a beating last week -because I didn't wrap so well I guess -so I'm trying to figure out if it is my wraps, my gloves (still pretty new) that is making this hurt. Is it the sort of pain that my body just needs to get accustomed to -like getting your butt accustomed to riding a bike?

My thumb started hurting almost as soon as I gloved up -so now I'm wondering if my gloves need to be broken in or if I need a different size or what.

    Thanks for any advice.

First thing I would do if I was experiencing these problems is stop boxing until the pain goes away. If it doesn't go away, I'd go see a doctor.

Also, do you try to punch as hard as you possibly can every single punch? Don't. Don't try to kill the bag is the hardest thing I had to learn and am still learning to do.

Really, since you have a trainer you need to tell him about the pain in your hands. Your trainer can give you a lot better advice that anyone here.

Your gloves really shouldn't need to be broken in. You can also buy some gel knuckle guards:

You can also do knuckle push ups for a little bit of knuckle/wrist conditioning. I would wait until the pain you're experiencing now stops before doing anything, then start up again slowly.

Thanks! I don't mind the knuckle bruising but the thumb pain and finger pain are..well...a pain....I'm going to a doctor, but they sent me for x-rays for the thumb.

So really? Wait until there is no pain? I was really hoping it was going to be the sort of thing that hurts until you get used to it. My thumb hurts because it feels as if my glove thumb is too high, so I thought it would eventually get where I need it.

I will try to stop killing the bag - I assumed that was sort of the point. Maybe I need to spring for a 1-on-1 with my trainer.

      'preciate the help!

Embeding was disabled. The video shows a proper way to wrap up. The thumb pain can be caused by anything from improper technique to not wraping the thumb corectly or a badly fited glove.

Considering that you use boxing training just to get in shape maybe the trainer didn't stress enough the importance of properly hitting the bag. Good thing you're gonna get them check out. For the hands to be a little sore is normal at the begining but outright pain shouldn't be.

Well I've been trying to learn to wrap properly, but I'm still not there -even though I know the steps in theory. That video helps -thanks!!

Well -back from x-ray -nothing is broken, it seems to be a tendon strain from a fall I had about 2 months ago that boxing is keeping from healing. I will have to look for more info on form and technique, and maybe spring for more time with my trainer to discuss my glove etc. because they said I would have a hard time finding a great glove since I'm a 5'4" woman with small hands and long fingers. My current glove is the Ringside-Professional-Aerobic-Boxing-Glove

You guys have been great! thanks!!

Just a quick update -a few trips to the chiropractor and it feels tons better. I'm bracing it at night to and trying to learn knuckle push-ups -it seems that my push-up drills are stressing it a bit. Thanks again for the help.
