Use of body punches in amateur

body punches are so hard to score even when your landing them because judges never apreciate them unless its a belter and there so short and usually done on the inside so hard to spot. plus 3 or 4 rounds is not long enough to wear a guy down unless his defence to the body is extremely leaky. nowadays i never put any power into them at all, i just use it for variation and to create openings, (jab to body, right cross upstairs or right cross to the body followed by left hook up top etc)

What are your thoughts on the effectiveness of body punches in amateurs?

    Body shots all day long.

You're right that three rounds isn't enough time to wear guys down...unless you throw them really hard (which I do). Most guys in my experience so far can't defend them very well because they aren't used to having them thrown at them in sparring.

One or two shots isn't going to have a ton of effect (unless you place them perfectly on the liver etc) but if you keep at it you will wear guys out.

I have to do that because I'm kinda slow so I need to get guys down to my speed level haha.

But it's a good idea to throw them anyways to mix it up and create openings. Hit a guy in the body good and he'll drop his hands a bit to protect leaving him less protected up top.

your combinations are always most effective when you work up and down, even if they dont score points bodyshots will create openings. if nothing else just making your oponent have to be aware of them will make it easier to land to the head.

and i dont really agree with you on the damage thing eighter, most guys are wide open to the solar plexus in the ams. set it up so they wont expect it and hit him hard, then step to the side and whack him to the liver. if u are an accurate puncher landing that just one time will slow him down plenty.

being a chavez like bodypuncher isnt an effective style in the ams, but dont overlook it completely eighter.

im not saying they wont hurt they will, but we r talking about amateurs and its all about scoring. whether they hurt or not isnt the point, its whether the judges score it and like you said, 3 rounds isnt enough to make an effect.

totally agree with you though about making your opponent aware of them so you can create openings. thats what i was saying before i never put power in them i just use it to set him up, that way sometimes you can just feint to the body and come up top

You might as well hit hard to the liver or solar plexus when you have the chance it'll put anyone down if you hit them hard enough. I throw a lot of body shots when I'm sparring someone taller than I am

dude, if you become good at body punching, you'll be able to drop people with body shots... i put all my power into every body shot because it gets them worried about getting hit there again, cuz most dudes tend to leave it open a whole lot more than their heads

yup body punch is an amateur's weakness.. By the way, Do you need to use all your punching power even its just a sparring? or you still need to reconsider if your sparring partner might get hurt?

Body shots are great, but just be mindful that they often don't score in the amateurs, so you can use them to create openings for shots that will score.

Eg: Jab, cross, move in closer behind the jab cross, then left/right rip downstairs, then step back and straight right to the head (your scoring shot)
