  • Jabbing To The Right

Oh geez. For the years that I've been in the gym, I didn't realize that my footwork is all wrong. And it sucks more cause my old coach never corrected me.

Anyhow every right hander is used to jabbing to the left cause the movement just feels natural. But how the heck do you jab going to the right? Is it the same step and slide movement? Does anyone have a video or anything like that?

It is pretty much a step and slide movement. A mistake lots of people make when jabbing to the right is squaring up while doing so. It seems unnatural compared to moving left but it just takes pracptice. It is a very useful thing to do against someone with a good right hand!

more than walking to your right, lean your head to the right a bit. there's an article in here posted this days which talks a lot about jabs but doesn't talk much about jabbing in angles, up jabs leaning to your left or leaning to the right.

its not as natural as moving to your left so everyone has the same problem u do when they start out. theres only one fix and thats lots of training. cubans shadowbox atleast 10 rounds a day, i would advise this to any fighter but especially one struggling with the fundamentals.

heres why its hard.. when moving left you move the left foot first just like if u were throwing a basic jab, since u step of the right foot when u jab u are free to move the left foot to the left (step) as you jab then just take a small step with the right/pivot and throw another jab. its the same move as a normal jab, u just move left instead of forward.

but moving to the right is a whole other thing. u are used to starting the motion as u jab, but now the movement is made with the other foot and since u need the right foot to push of when u jab it cant be used to step to the side at the same time. causing u to feel out of rhytm and un coordinated.

the move.. take one step to the right/pivot of your left foot. push of the back leg as u jab, take another step/pivot, punch etc..

when moving to the left these thing come in a diffrent order, and are put into a much more simple move. when moving to the right its more complicated. just slow it down, be patient and make sure u take small steps.

some tips.. are to watch footage of fighters with great footwork, and put tape one the floor to show how far u should move your foot. as u get better decrease the distance and take more, quicker steps instead of lesser long ones. i shadowbox 3 round using just the jab and footwork, u should do the same and in your case focus alot on moving to the right.
