  • Is Moving Like This Just Fancy and Unfunctional?

Few questions based on this video:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ITk0W8Kl62Y

    1) The form of sidestep he uses at the 10 second mark...is this mainly used to get out of the way of someone, or is effective at creating angles for counter attacks and during combinations like a regular sidestep (step to right, slide)

    2) The shuffling lateral step he shows at the 20 second mark...cool looking but is it really practical for most people? looks like you would easily get caught off balance using that technique

    3) The swagga step forward...should this replace the standard step and drag? I like it, it flows really nicely, but its hard for me to jab off it. When ever I punch and move, I'm use to pushing off the back leg.

    Thanks guys

don't you notice that this is all the footwork of fighters with good reflexes?

      Ali, Floyd?

Well he is sure spreading much love by the end of it.

I dunno, some of it might make sense for the right boxer but I wouldn't replace *step and drag* with that. I'd rather be doing kendo footwork instead of that. To each his own though.

Oh and yeah, I'd never use such lateral movement. I don't see how one can surprise an opponent with an angle shot when both feet are close together, not to mention you're prone to get knocked down.

          Sigh....I think you're right.

**goes back to stepping and dragging**

I don't fight, but I train in Muay Thai, and have been watching a lot of boxing. At home I occasionally practice my footwork and also find myself doing that. Its nothing special. Whenever I spar, I also move like that to get out of the way. Its a habit for me, but allows me to stay light on my feet. But like I said, its nothing special, and it won't make you Ali or anything... at least to me.

EDIT (add): Oh BTW, this dude is gangsta, training in jeans and with a phone hanging off them).

              1. i use this alot, its not really for creating angles to punch as much as it is to get out of the way like he shows later in the video. what it does is help u switch directions from left to right much faster, i use it mainly to get of the ropes or out of a corner. its effective against pressure fighters forcing them to re set constantly and enabling u to get out of harms way quickly after u got your punches of.

              2. i use this at times, most good boxers can dance when they need to. thats not saying it should be your main way of moving around the ring, in most cases it shouldnt. but if u are up on points in the third round looking to kill time, trying to get a breather staying away from action or want to step back to study your oponent a bit or get your head togheter its always good to be able to dance. in some fights it could even be your main way of moving depending on the oponent u are facing.

it takes good footwork, speed and reflexes to make it work for u in any situation though. mayweather, hearns, hopkins etc all knew how to dance when they needed to but none of them used it as their main way to move around the ring.

              3. i do this too. i dont jab of it, just use it if im way out of range looking to close the gap quicker and put some heat on my oponent. u are spot on in your assesment of it, it is hard to punch of but it flows nicely and u can close the gap much faster than to just step forward. dont replace the step unless your out of punching range.

Jersey Joe Walcott was the master of the walk off, did it much more than Ali or Mayweather.
