  • Thoughts on Pushing/ Leaning

How do you guys deal with guys who lean/push onto you as soon as they get close? Is there an effective strategy to get out of there once they're leaning on you or is it better to conserve energy and just let them smother their punches while you relax and just block for a bit?

Is it even legal to lean like that or is it just frowned upon? (namely in the amateurs)

Do you guys consider this a valid strategy /technique?

Without going into too much detail, what always works for people who spar against me (considering I like to lean and push) was pivoting off of either foot, and throwing the upper cut. Either step back with the back foot, make a slight bit of room, shoot the right upper into his gut or his jaw, go back to clinch position, repeat. Spinning and pivoting is ideal against this, because the strange circle motion is very difficult to stick to, end sometimes they will let go and be off balance enough for you to land a good shot. But yeah, pivot like a mo, spin like a russian dancer.

Also, I know it isnt boxing, but the general idea behind spinning in the clinch, if you enter a search for muay thai clinches and try to see some matches, you see the way to get a person off balance, or to get them away from you, is to spin, only difference being, you dont knee them. You get the idea, either way, its a good thing to take a look at for a basic idea of not being off balance in the clinch.

EDIT: Oh, and that clinch junk dont fly in amatuers, its really looked down upon, and alot of refs will dock a point if you are the one doing the pushing and leaning on the other person.

What if I get stuck on the ropes with the guy leaning on me? It makes it really hard to pivot at that point. Should I just wait for openings and exchange even though hes pretty much smothering my punches?

Listening to you makes my ears hurt...

...get it? Tyson Holyfield 2? Lolz.

Historic boxing pun, I like to try and slip one in whenever the opportunity arises...

          ...that's what she said!

          Ha! I'm on a roll!

If you get caught on the ropes in a clinch and you want to get out of there the only way is to spin with him. Get him on the ropes and either maintain the clinch or get out with a combination.

There is truth in these words.

Only other thing being if he is really big and strong or able to control you, dont try to fight too much, especially if it is in a fight. It may be a tactic to wear you out (one Muhammed Ali did quite well), plus most refs will break you almost immeadietly. Wait for the break, catch a breather, or look for him to make a mistake to be able to spin him.
