  • Having A lot of Trouble With Range

Its simple. When ever I work combinations, I always stifle my straight punches. For example: if I throw a 1-3-2 on the bag, after the left hook I'm so close to the bag that my straight right hits the bag with my elbow completely bent.

Is that correct? If not, how do I work things out so that my right hand isn't so stifled after a hook? I always try to take a small step with each punch I make.

The left hook is close range punch, the right straight is a medium to long range punch. In order to land the straight you'd want your opponent to take a step back otherwise you certainly wouldn't want to step forward to land the straight. When working on the bag you either step back to throw the straight or you stay where you are and throw an inside cross which is a short straight punch with the same range as the hook. You throw it by snapping the arm out and NOT following through with the shoulder. Don't move the shoulder past square.

A classic combination with the inside cross is lead hook - rear hook - lead uppercut - rear inside cross.

Remember that the heavy bag helps develop your movement round an opponent to find the right range and the correct punch for that range. So the problem you are encountering is a positive one, and better to find it on the bag than in a fight!

Thanks man. So the inside cross is basically an arm punch?

Yeah although you should twist your body into it a little just don't let your shoulders go past square and don't reach with it. It's short, fast, and snappy. If it finds the jaw then it has potential knockout power. I was hitting a guy with these on Tuesday and he ended up "no mas" LOL!

EDIT: also keep your elbow held in tight to your body, don't let your elbow come up. This punch is like a cheap POP!
