  • Countering from a block

I hear some people say only block a jab and slip a straight right but i had some fair succes of blocking a straight right and countering rigth after it with my own right but this doesnt seem to work against people with a long reach.
So should i only block against people from own height and slip against taller people or does it all depend on how ur oppenent fight?

Yeah if his arms are longer and you are blocking his punch when it's fully extended, you aren't going to be able to reach him with your counter shot because he can hit you fror farther away than you can. So you need to take a step in with the block to make up that distance.

If you see that right hand coming, get your left hand/arm up to block, step into it to smother his punch (so he can't get full extension and keep you on the end of his punches) and throw back your own punch(es) right back.

Same with if you are going to slip the punch, you need to slip forward/inside and not just move your head sideways.

There is no rules in boxing that says you "should Always" do such and such. Different strokes for different folks. Everything changes from opponent to opponent.

For instance, If I block a straight right than I might try to counter with a left hook upstairs, than downstairs, than maybe aim for his sternum, or return with a straight right, I keep trying something new till it works.

Heck, to counter the jab if you see it coming you can slide and throw your right hand over the jab at the same time as long as you see when that jab is coming. That's my favorite way to counter it.

I also love to let go at the body when I'm counter punching. Even if you don't land, just the fact that they know theres a hard bodyshot coming everytime they throw a punch, makes them more hesitant to let anything go.
